Prior to this season, Jerome Meyinsse had little to brag about. Sure, he twice won All-ACC Academic honors, but Meyinsse also had only started one game during his three-year tenure at Virginia and had made only 35 field goals in that entire span.

Despite the frigid temperatures and falling snow, John Paul Jones Arena hosted a heated thriller Saturday afternoon, as Wake Forest handed the Cavaliers their second home overtime loss on the year, 64-61.

Thinking back to the wide world of sports 25 years ago, I realize it actually wasn't so wide. The market for professional and collegiate athletics has exploded in recent years, in much the same way Tamagotchi pets, pogs and pop/rock boy bands haven't. With professional athletes being elevated to almost demigod status and enough ESPN channels for each one of Tiger's mistresses, sports are receiving more media coverage than ever.

Virginia returned last night from a successful road trip to North Carolina for the second time this season. Yesterday evening, the team defeated North Carolina 75-60, picking up its 13th win of the season and its fourth in the ACC at the Dean Smith Center. The Tar Heels, on the other hand, dropped to 2-4 in the ACC and are now 13-8 overall.

Down three points with eight seconds left in regulation, Virginia desperately needed a score. Triple-covered several feet behind the arc, sophomore guard Sammy Zeglinski buried a game-tying shot to send the game to overtime. The momentum that Virginia Tech had built up coming back from a 10 point deficit with three minutes left in regulation, however, carried over into overtime and eventually helped the Hokies to a 76-71 victory against the once hot Cavaliers.

After failing to extend its eight-game win streak last week, a Virginia team eager to regain momentum will face its fifth ACC opponent of the season tonight at John Paul Jones Arena, taking on in-state rival Virginia Tech.

Out with the old, in with the new. Groh is gone, Mike London returns. After a nine-loss season, including one to FCS school William & Mary, Athletic Director Craig Littlepage decided he had had enough. But it wasn't just the AD. Students, fans, media and even the players to some extent - from what I heard through the grapevine - were ready for change. Some insiders believe select alumni even took it upon themselves to raise the money to buy out the rest of Groh's contract. So in case you were wondering just how badly the University wanted Al Groh gone, you have your answer: $4.33 million bad.

I've always been curious about the use of the name "football" in describing the game played in the NFL. In the rest of the world, a sport was already named football - yet somehow it wound up being called soccer in America, so that this other NFL sport could take its name. But NFL players barely ever use their feet to control the ball. What gives?

With 5.3 seconds remaining on the clock, Virginia inbounded the ball under the Penn State basket. At the time, the Cavaliers found themselves trailing by three to the Nittany Lions, on the wrong side of a second-half rally.

Virginia will travel to Cancun during Thanksgiving Break to play its final two games of the Cancun Challenge. After having defeated Rider and Oral Roberts at John Paul Jones Arena last week, the Cavaliers will face Stanford tomorrow and then either Cleveland State or Kentucky on Wednesday.

Returning ACC Rookie of the YearSylven Landesberg stressed that the 2009-10 season was not simply about improving his level of play but the play of those around him as well - a philosophy that was evident as soon as the sophomore guard assisted junior forward Mike Scott in scoring the first points of Virginia's season-opening win against Longwood on Friday.

With nine weeks behind us, the NFL regular season is more or less half finished. Other than the Texans and the Giants, who have yet to have their bye weeks, each team has eight games played and eight games yet to play.

Last year, Virginia fell victim to Duke's first ACC victory since 2004. The Cavaliers again ended a dubious Blue Devil streak Saturday: Duke's 28-17 victory at Scott Stadium marks the first time since 1998-89 that the Blue Devils have defeated an ACC opponent in consecutive years.

When I sit back and think, I am always amazed about the role sports plays in our lives. Admittedly, some people are more affected by them than others, but sports have captured our attention for centuries.
