The Department of Homeland Security released a threat assessment report in which they wrote “racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists — specifically white supremacist extremists — will remain the most persistent and lethal threat in the Homeland.” The greatest terrorist threat to the United States is no longer ISIL or Al-Qaeda — it is homegrown terror. On Jan. 6, we saw right-wing extremists do what foreign terror groups have never been able to accomplish — disrupt Congress’s constitutional duties. The insurrection at the Capitol only cemented what has been a longstanding fact — we have ignored domestic terrorism for far too long.

Know your worth. That’s a classic piece of advice given to any young professional seeking employment or internships in any field. However, if the internship opportunities we’re presented with are accurate, we’re worth nothing. Unpaid internships, which account for 43 percent of internships at for-profit companies and most public sector internships, are now a major part of entering the workforce — they shouldn’t be. These unpaid positions are a detriment to interns, low-income students and the overall economy. To fix that, we need to ban unpaid internships entirely.

In my first article for The Cavalier Daily, I wrote that the Charlottesville community should continue observing Founder’s Day. I was proud of that article and the nuance that I thought it came with. Simply put, I was wrong, and I’m ashamed I wrote it. A man who owned and raped his fellow human beings should not be honored with a day of remembrance or even statues in the middle of campus. As a university, we give credence to people who deserve no honor. We must work to be better.

We have a unique opportunity this year in Virginia. Voting is now the most accessible it has ever been in the state’s history. For 44 days, from Sept. 18 to Oct. 31, any registered voter in Virginia can vote early at a designated polling location. During that same window, and through to Nov. 3, any registered voter can mail-in their ballot, provided the ballot is postmarked by the Nov. 3 deadline. With a newly expanded access to voting, our generation must take advantage and vote in historic numbers.

President Donald Trump is the worst president in American history. He has forever damaged America’s society, culture, global standing, influence, economy and democracy. He spreads lies, misinformation, conspiracy theories, xenophobia, misogyny and attacks the fundamental institutions of our democracy and his political opponents. While Trump has caused these problems, he truly is a symptom of a decades-long crusade that devalues American voters. For years, the Republican Party has seemingly been working on a plot to undermine American democracy — this effort has gone unnoticed for far too long.

When the novel coronavirus began to gain attention in China, there was little concern in the United States. For many, it seemed like a distant threat we would never have to truly worry about. In another corner of the country, intelligence, public health and military officials drafted reports that a disease like this could ravage the country. The first case in the United States was reported at the end of January — and President Donald Trump ignored the threat. “We’ve pretty much shut it down coming from China,” he said Feb. 3. But we didn’t.

The media today often takes great care to approach any given issue from an “objective” standpoint. Both sides get an equal say to frame the issue from a non-biased viewpoint. However, when one side of an issue relies on misinformation and a lack of empirical evidence, the media contributes to creating false equivalencies, which are inherent logical fallacies with no true factual merit. False equivalencies rely on slight similarities between two different items to declare them the same. They occur by giving equal footing and time to two different sides, even when there is only one supported by fact. For example, this type of false equivalency occurs if CNN hosted a debate between a flat-earther and a geologist. Often, the media fails to convey the truth of any given story because they give so much time to such logical fallacies. Instead, the media must present the real truth of stories and not give fuel to the fire that is misinformation.

Denver Riggleman, R-Charlottesville, has now been representing Virginia’s 5th District — which includes Charlottesville — for over a year. In a year, he has shown us exactly why he is unfit to represent this community in Congress. Since taking off, he has shown with both his campaign financing and his voting record that his loyalties lie not with the citizens of Charlottesville, but rather follow the interests of big money donors.

The Equal Rights Amendment is a proposed constitutional amendment meant to eliminate any form of discrimination between the sexes. Introduced in 1972, the amendment had a ratification deadline in 1982. By the deadline, the required count for ratification fell short by three states. In the past few weeks, Virginia became the final required state to ratify the amendment. However, because the ratification deadline passed almost forty years ago, the ERA is not law. In effect, the three latest states to ratify it — Illinois, Nevada and Virginia — are suing to have the ERA recognized as the 28th Amendment. With the legal battles won in the past 50 years, an amendment like the ERA has become redundant.

According to the Pew Research Center, 39,773 people were victims of gun-related deaths in 2017. Nothing justifies such high numbers of gun-related deaths. Milan Bharadwaj, one of my fellow Opinion Columnists, recently wrote a piece arguing that recent insurgencies across the globe justify the current lack of gun regulations in the United States. Furthermore, his argument contends that gun ownership protects Americans and benefits minorities. His contentions that gun ownership promotes protection, especially for minorities and in cases of insurgency, are either wrong or not applicable to the United States.

Early this month, London hosted the 2019 North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit, a meeting of the Western Coalition’s leaders and figures. Heads of state from all over the world, including the United States, met to discuss the future of the Cold War-era alliance on its 70th anniversary. The alliance has been fending off multiple threats, including Russia, terrorism and the Trump administration throughout its existance.

Despite the rise of texting and the decline of calling, Americans’ phone lines are constantly in use. Robocalls programmed online can send out thousands at a time for only pennies. Consumers get dozens of spam calls a month, each with a robotic or recorded voice talking into the other end. There is ample infrastructure out there to help solve the issue, but neglect from government leaders and deregulation from our regulatory boards have pushed consumers to the edge with spam calls.

In a city that was plagued with race-driven violence just two years ago, the Charlottesville City Council voted to cease celebration of Founder’s Day, celebrated on April 13. It will be replaced with Liberation and Freedom Day to honor the day Union forces arrived in Charlottesville in 1865. Despite Jefferson’s morally unforgiveable slave-holding past, the countless contributions he made to the University, country and world warrant his continued existence in our shared history. Rewriting our holidays and history only serves to push what we dislike out of mind. Instead, our focus should be on acknowledging the good and bad of our history and learning from it.
