No. 17 Virginia field hockey took the field in the final of the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament against No. 8 North Carolina Sunday. The Cavaliers (12-8, 3-3 ACC), who were the fifth seed in the tournament, lost 1-0 to the third-seed Tar Heels (13-6, 4-2 ACC), who won their fifth straight ACC Championship.

Virginia has experienced highs and lows over the past two weekends as it took on four different ranked opponents. The Cavaliers (record) opened ACC play on the road Sept. 17 against the Cardinals (8-1, 2-0 ACC) in a narrow 1-0 defeat before traveling to Ohio State on Sept. 19 and picking up a big 2-1 win against the Buckeyes (6-2, 1-0 Big 10). Days later, Virginia earned its first conference win of the season against the Demon Deacons (4-4, 1-1 ACC) by a score of 3-1 before experiencing a heartbreaking come-from-behind effort resulting in a loss at the hands of the Monarchs (6-2, 1-1 Big East) 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

No. 10 Virginia continued their strong start to the season Friday, defeating Miami of Ohio 2-0 in Charlottesville in yet another shutout. The Cavaliers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) controlled much of the gameplay as the RedHawks (2-5, 0-0 MAC) struggled to find offensive momentum.

Virginia closed out its regular season with four straight losses to Georgia Tech during this past weekend’s series in Atlanta, Ga. The Cavaliers (15-33, 10-27 ACC) struggled to find a rhythm in all four games, giving up six or more runs a game to the Yellow Jackets (19-25, 11-19 ACC) while being unable to eclipse more than three runs themselves.

Coming into this year’s NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships as the number one ranked team in the nation proved to be undaunting for Virginia. The Cavaliers led from start to finish in a stalwart showing, never looking back from the jump.

No. 10 Virginia men’s swimming and diving wrapped up their week of ACC Championship competition in Greensboro, N. C. Saturday with a fourth-place finish, scoring 921 points. The Cavaliers finished behind No. 7 Louisville — who won the meet with 1181 points — No. 5 NC State and No. 13 Virginia Tech in a meet loaded with top 25 teams, including No. 15 Florida State, No. 17 Notre Dame, No. 18 North Carolina, No. 22 Georgia Tech and No. 25 Pittsburgh.

Virginia women’s swimming and diving just keeps on winning. The No. 2 Cavaliers captured their second consecutive and 17th total ACC title this weekend in Greensboro, N.C., finishing with a score of 1486. This total is just six and a half points off their meet-record score of 1492.5 points set at last year’s ACC Championships, and well ahead of No. 11 NC State, who finished second with 1317 points.

Sophomore swimmer Kate Douglass’ career since joining Virginia has been nothing short of impressive, as she has consistently collected honors at both the collegiate and national level. This season, Douglass’ performance at the Toyota U.S. Open was what set her apart from the competition. With a time of 57.43 in the 100-meter butterfly, she placed third and ultimately earned a spot on the 2020-21 U.S. Senior National Team, and will race the same event in international competitions with the team.

Following Virginia field hockey’s recent losses to North Carolina and Louisville, the team travels to Durham, N.C. to face Duke, who are coming off of its first win of this shortened season — a 2-0 victory over Wake Forest on Sunday.
