On the one-year anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally, the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir brought hundreds of people together Sunday afternoon to sing for “healing, harmony and fun,” in what they called the “C’ville Sing Out.” The event was moved from IX Art Park to its rain location inside Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church due to inclement weather conditions.

Michael Sam, former football player and LGBTQ activist, spoke at McLeod Hall Thursday night to close the Excellence Through Diversity Distinguished Learning Series hosted by the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Sam was the year’s final speaker, after hearing from activists including Cornel West, Angela Davis and many others throughout the previous year.

The Graduate Student Coalition for Liberation, including graduate students from multiple Humanities disciplines at the University, presented the “Charlottesville Syllabus” at Wilson Hall Thursday as a part of this year’s Humanities Week at the University sponsored by the Institute for Humanities and Global Culture.

The University College Republicans hosted a debate Tuesday for three candidates seeking the Republican Party of Virginia’s nomination in the upcoming U.S. Senate race. Batten Dean Allan C. Stam and Andrew Pennock, assistant professor of public policy, moderated the debate at Garrett Hall, which touched on several issues, including the role of Congress in infrastructure reform and climate change.

Asst. Music Prof. Nomi Dave moderated a panel of University students and members of the Charlottesville community concerning gun violence Monday. The panel was entitled “Gun Sense” and focused on topics including gun violence as it relates to school shootings as well as race and domestic violence.

The Black Student Alliance and Theta Lambda Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority co-sponsored a community discussion on sexual assault and rape culture in the University’s black community during a BSA general body meeting Monday. Taylor Lamb, a fourth-year College student and Sigma Gamma Rho president, moderated the conversation with assistance from Ciara Blackston, a third-year College student and BSA membership chair.

The Board of Visitors Committee on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise met Thursday morning to consider new academic initiatives at U.Va.-Wise. The Committee discussed the proposed implementation of a new online nursing degree program at U.Va.-Wise and the establishment of a nurse practitioner program.
