As the University community processes the aftermath of Sunday’s shooting, the Virginia Athletics community is grieving the loss of three student athletes. Three Virginia football players — second-year student Devin Chandler, third-year student Lavel Davis Jr. and fourth-year student D'Sean Perry — were shot fatally Sunday. Third-year student Mike Hollins underwent a second surgery Tuesday and a fifth student was also injured.

Whether seen on the field or heard from the stands, the Cavalier Marching Band has been an integral part of Virginia athletics since its initial founding in 2003. With about 240 members today, the band has a significant role across a number of sports at the University — particularly in football.

The University announced Tuesday that an anonymous former student-athlete has made the single largest donation to the Virginia Athletics Foundation, a $40 million contribution made with the intent of making a “significant” impact in the lives of student athletes.

With the 2021 NFL Draft fast approaching and various declared prospects from the Virginia football team, the Cavaliers are looking to add new faces to the pros. Last year in the 2020 NFL Draft, two members of the Virginia football team heard their names called – Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joe Reed and New York Jets cornerback Bryce Hall.

The first major announcement regarding the men’s basketball team following the conclusion of Virginia’s season against Ohio in the NCAA tournament came on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore guard Casey Morsell announced that he will be officially entering the NCAA transfer portal and will be looking to join a new college program.

Coming off of a thrilling win against Louisville on March 6 that locked up the ACC regular season title for Virginia, the top-seed Cavaliers (18-6, 13-4 ACC) prepared to take on Syracuse on Thursday. The Orange (16-9, 9-7 ACC) came into the game as the No. 8 seed in the ACC following an impressive 89-68 victory against NC State the previous day.

Coming off of a 68-58 win against Louisville, the No. 16 Virginia men’s basketball team secured the ACC regular season title. Clinching the championship as well as the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament was made possible following Florida State’s loss to Notre Dame.

Coming off of a victory against Miami on March 1, the No. 21 Virginia men’s basketball team kept the ball rolling with a clutch win over Louisville to lock up the 2021 ACC regular season title. The Cavaliers (17-6, 13-4 ACC) dominated against the Cardinals (13-6, 8-5 ACC) for 40 minutes to come away victorious, 68-58.

Coming off of a two-game losing streak with losses against Florida State and Duke, the No. 15 Virginia men’s basketball team looked to get back to their winning ways on Wednesday. The Cavaliers (15-6, 11-4 ACC) faced off in a close one against NC State (11-9, 7-8 ACC). When it was all said and done, it was the Wolfpack that came out on top, edging Virginia 68-61.

In the 152nd installment of the all-time series between in-state rivals Virginia and Virginia Tech, it was the Hokies (13-3, 7-2 ACC) who came away with the victory against the Cavaliers (11-3, 7-1 ACC). The Virginia loss came on the heels of a dominant 81-58 win against Syracuse on Jan. 25.

After putting away No. 20 Clemson by a score of 85-50 on Jan. 16, expectations were high for No. 13 Virginia coming into their game against Georgia Tech on Saturday. Instead, the Cavaliers (10-2, 6-0 ACC) ended up in a slugfest against the surprisingly solid Yellow Jackets (7-4, 3-2 ACC) and managed to escape with an incredibly narrow 64-62 victory.

Following back-to-back wins against Notre Dame and Wake Forest, the Virginia men’s basketball team came into Saturday’s bout against Boston College with the determination to maintain their winning ways. The Cavaliers (7-2, 3-0 ACC) accomplished just that at the Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass., knocking off the Eagles (2-9, 0-5 ACC) by a score of 61-49.
