Virginia softball opened its 2020 season against Charlotte and Appalachian State in the Charlotte Invitational over the weekend. The tournament kicked off Friday when the Cavaliers (3-1, 0-0 ACC) rallied in extra innings to knock down the 49ers (1-3, 0-0 C-USA) in an exciting season-opener. Virginia went on to beat Charlotte a second time Saturday but split its games against the Mountaineers (2-2, 0-0 SBC) to round out play.

Virginia softball will play the first home game of its 2020 season March 3 against James Madison in its brand-new softball stadium, Palmer Park. With the intention “to build and maintain the highest quality facilities in the country,” the athletic department hopes the new stadium will help Virginia compete with the premier programs in the ACC and across the country.

The Virginia volleyball team dropped two hard-fought conference games on the road this weekend. The Cavaliers (11-18, 3-13 ACC) battled hard but fell short against Wake Forest (12-15, 2-14 ACC) and Clemson (11-16, 5-11 ACC).

The Virginia volleyball team won one and lost one this weekend. The Cavaliers (11-16, 3-11 ACC) cruised past Clemson (10-14, 4-9 ACC) in straight sets but fell to Georgia Tech (17-8, 10-4 ACC) in straight sets.

After a nine-game skid, the Virginia volleyball team captured their first win since their bout against Virginia Tech Sept. 27. The Cavaliers (10-15, 2-10 ACC) fell to Duke (11-14, 4-8 ACC) in straight sets Friday night but rebounded Sunday with a four-set victory against Wake Forest (11-12, 1-11 ACC).

Virginia went on the road to challenge Louisville and Notre Dame this weekend. The Cavaliers (9-14, 1-9 ACC) were defeated in both match-ups, knocked off by the Cardinals (15-5, 8-2 ACC) and the Fighting Irish (15-5, 8-2 ACC) in straight sets.

This past weekend, Virginia hosted both N.C. State (8-11, 3-4 ACC) and North Carolina (8-10, 5-3 ACC) at Memorial Gymnasium. Friday night, the Cavaliers (9-12, 1-7 ACC) fell to N.C. State in four sets and two days later fell to North Carolina in straight sets.

Virginia dropped straight sets to Boston College Friday in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and to Syracuse Sunday. The Cavaliers (9-10, 1-5 ACC) couldn’t generate momentum against either team as they conceded both matches 0-3.

Virginia battled against No. 23 Florida State and Miami this past weekend on the road but was ultimately toppled as the Cavaliers (9-8, 1-3 ACC) couldn’t finish with a win. Junior outside hitter Sarah Billiard contributed a combined 32 kills in the matches, and sophomore middle blocker Milla Ciprian hit a career-best .583 (7-0-12) against Miami (7-4, 3-1 ACC).

Virginia just couldn’t keep up as No. 4 Pittsburgh recorded a sweep Wednesday night at Memorial Gymnasium to open ACC play. The Panthers (12-1, 1-0 ACC) took three straight sets, winning 25-11, 25-17 and 25-21.
