The University will be downsizing its human resources department in an effort to consolidate positions across the Academic Division, Medical Center and University Physicians Group. The plan, called UFirst, would cut 40 positions from Human Resources, reducing the number of people employed in HR positions from 240 to 200.

The Systems and Information Engineering department held a meeting Wednesday afternoon for Systems undergraduates to discuss the potential merger with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. The Systems and Informations Engineering department held a discussion in Olsson Hall Wednesday afternoon to gauge undergraduate student opinion of a potential merger with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. The room was filled, with roughly 75 students in attendance, and most students who spoke out during the meeting were against the merger.

The Jefferson Trust presented 19 grants to students and faculty April 21, marking the end to an application process that began in October 2016. The Jefferson Trust, which is part of the Alumni Association, awarded $727,946 to support initiatives at the University.

The Honor Committee tossed around ideas during their meeting Sunday night for initiatives to educate students about Honor in the coming year. The Committee broke into small groups divided by school to discuss these initiatives and then shared them with the larger group.

The special prosecutor in the court case considering whether Charlottesville’s Vice Mayor Wes Bellamy should be removed from office has determined that the petition filed against Bellamy did not receive enough signatures for it to be considered by the court. As a result, a Charlottesville Circuit Court judge dismissed the petition on March 8.

The Honor Committee voted Sunday night to pursue adding “inextricably linked” to the Committee’s bylaws related to Informed Retractions. Under this language, a student could file one IR for multiple events if those events are “inextricably linked,” meaning their actions and circumstances are similar enough to constitute one Honor offense.

After deciding not to take a single stance as an organization, members of the Honor Committee have published their individual opinions of a referendum that would affect the Committee’s constitution if successful. Of the 27-person Honor Committee, 18 members plan to vote “no” and nine plan to vote “yes” on the amendment, which proposes to lower the threshold of support necessary to amend the Honor Constitution in University-wide referendums.

The Honor Committee discussed several Informed Retraction reform proposals at their meeting Sunday night. Students voted to amend the Honor Committee constitution in 2013 to include the Informed Retraction, which permits students who have been reported to the Honor Committee to admit guilt for alleged offenses, make amends with affected parties and take a two-semester leave of absence from the University.

The Millennial Advocacy Council (MAC-PAC) and NextGen GOP, two Virginia-based conservative political organizations, hosted a debate for Republican statewide office candidates Saturday afternoon. The debate was part of MAC-PAC’s Inaugural Phoenix Summit, a weekend-long conference at the Paramount Theater.
