Days after ringing in the new year, 18 students and two professors closed out their study abroad trip in Ecuador in an unexpected way — leaving amid a nationwide lockdown. The 60-day state of emergency, declared Jan. 8 when the notorious drug lord Adolfo Macías disappeared from prison, began while students were on-site for the U.Va. in Ecuador & the Galápagos Islands January Term. The state of emergency was extended Friday due to ongoing gang violence. Two months after their departure, students express mixed feelings about the trip, and the International Studies Office continues to evaluate whether the study abroad program will be reoffered next year.

The Institute of World Language at the University hosted a language symposium to celebrate its 10th anniversary in the Newcomb Ballroom and Lounge Thursday. With their theme, “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” the symposium intended to recognize the collaborative learning efforts between faculty and students across language disciplines and reflect upon what the institute has accomplished thus far.

As another group of first-year students trickle onto Grounds this semester, members of the University community are doing their part to cultivate a sense of belonging among this new set of Cavaliers. The College Council hosted its second annual block party for first-year COLA students Friday. The event is aimed at helping students feel included among their peers and within the larger University community.

While many large and small businesses alike contribute to the University community, one small student-founded business in particular has flourished and spread sweetness on Grounds. Fourth-year Commerce student Tresure Gary has capitalized on her combined passions for baking and entrepreneurship by founding her own pastry business.

Shea House hosted an anniversary dinner Thursday in celebration of its 20th year as a language immersion program. Since its founding in 2002, Shea House has provided a remarkable immersive language experience for students living on-Grounds at the University. The program has welcomed a myriad of students with a passion for language over the years through a competitive application process.
