Walking into the University as a transfer student is hard. It’s hard. It doesn’t matter how bubbly you are, how attractive you are (“So, you think you’re really pretty?”), how smart you are or how friendly you are. It will always be hard. I am a second semester fourth year and, I’ll be honest with you, I’m still hash-tagging #transferproblems.

At a very young age, I fell in love with killer whales. Sounds oxymoronic, right? But killer whales, also known as orca whales, are historically friendly, gentle and loving creatures that live with their families for the entirety of their lives. When in the wild, they have blissfully swum alongside humans, with no whale-human violence ever reported in the wild. But I stress the word “wild.”

For as long as I can remember, the Christmas season has been heralded by chocolate advent calendars, holiday tunes on the radio, a wreath on the door and, of course, a constant stream of Christmas classics on the television screen.

I have no words. No words to describe a man’s violent struggle against putrid spectacles of oppression. No words to explain a young woman’s tenacity after years of deep gashes and sore genitals. For the first time in my life, I have no words to describe what I saw.

Attending screenings at the annual Virginia Film Festival is like drinking a glass of red wine and then having a conversation with the vintner. It might not be the newest or most buzzworthy drink (here’s looking at you “Ciroc boys”), and you might not always enjoy the wine, but the experience allows you to understand the mastery it took to create the wine and gives you a new appreciation.

At the tender age of 5 years old, my grandfather took me to see Disney on Ice: Beauty and the Beast. I was enthralled, watching my favorite characters come to life, dance across the ice with ease, grace — perfection on. The skaters encompassed beauty, villainy and, in the end, the classic romance between two star-crossed lovers.

Sprinkled throughout the crowd of 14,000 screaming Taylor Swift fans were illuminated signs covered in various combinations of glitter, Christmas lights and beloved lyrics. While some college students may have felt a little too old among the predominantly preteen crowd, they could find some solace in the woman with a homemade shirt imprinted, “I may be 42, but I feel 22.”

Miley Cyrus has been a household name since “Hannah Montana” aired on Disney channel. But the girl who was once on the front of every eight-year-old’s lunchbox in a blonde wig has, to put it gently, lost her charm.

With looming finals dampening everyone’s spirits, it seems to be the perfect time to look ahead to a sunnier, more melodic season. This summer, big name bands and those just getting off the ground will come to Charlottesville to perform for anxiously awaiting crowds — and if you are staying in town, I would highly recommend you check them out. There is no better way to spend a beautiful summer evening than rocking out to a great live band.

Before the time of Facebook and Twitter, of rip-off 3-D films and BlueRay, of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, there were the ‘90s. If this sounds like a fairy-tale introduction to the first decade of our lives, that’s only because that is exactly what it was. Let’s just admit it – the ’90s were pretty freaking great. There were pandas on the front page of the Washington Post’s Metro section and my problems were pretty much limited to my two twin sisters crying in the back of our Cheerio-crusted gold minivan.

The first time I ever saw a stylish girl — tall brown boots, straightened hair, fresh makeup and all — taking “selfies” in Club Clem I was astonished. I thought selfies were reserved for insecure, acne-ridden 13-year-olds or the muscle-bound jerks of MySpace. Apparently, I was wrong.

Before I crawl out of my hobbit hole, I should preface this tale by telling you I have a special connection to The Hobbit that no movie could diminish — no matter how long it was.

Once upon a time, we could turn our televisions on a particular channel and know whether we were going to be watching a comedy, horror or drama. Recent industry trends, though, have made this expectation unrealistic. As new genres and subgenres spring up left and right, much of what we see on TV has become unclassifiable. Despite the variety of programs available today, one key factor unites almost all of them: They disturb me.

Television shows can get pretty strange, creepy and downright disturbing, but none compare to Showtime’s Dexter. Never before have people sat down on a Sunday night and said, “Hey, I want to watch a nice serial killer who I completely support in all of his endeavors.” As unbelievable as it sounds, Dexter succeeds in rewiring your mind to believe the serial killer is the good guy.

I have harped on TLC for some time about its ridiculous reality shows that exploit the less fortunate and the strange. Breaking Amish is different. TLC is exploring a culture that has never been seen on television before. Why? Because the Amish traditionally don’t believe in allowing themselves to be photographed, let alone recorded. To convey the serious tone of the show, TLC began the first episode not with corny shots of a little girl with a round tummy holding a teacup pig (cough cough, Honey Boo Boo Child) but rather with simple white text on a black backdrop.

It’s been more than 20 years since the Dave Matthews Band was formed right here in Charlottesville. As with any band whose work and influences span decades, the Southern rock band has had numerous lineup changes and has experimented with multiple musical genres. I fell in love with DMB in the ‘90s when they were just coming into their own, and I’m happy to report that Away from the World, the band’s latest record, hearkens back to the classic DMB that first grabbed my attention.

In the last few years, gay rights have come to the forefront of politics, and the equality movement has trickled down into television yet again with Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal. The show centers on a gay couple, Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha), who try to have a child using a surrogate. The New Normal breaks barriers in the television world. Sure, gay couples have adopted children in other progressive television shows — like Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jessie Tyler Ferguson) do on Modern Family. But that was just a part of the show — not the show’s premise. The New Normal, however, is fresh and funny. Rather than being bogged down in the politics of such a controversial topic, it has the wit of Drop Dead Diva and the spunky nature of Glee (think season one).

You know it’s fall when the heat begins to subside, the leaves begin to change and fantastic television shows return to distract you from actually going outside and enjoying the weather. Yes, Netflix can get you through a summer full of Bachelor Pad, but if you’re anything like me you are itching to hit Hulu for some of your favorite shows. I am happy to tell you not to fear — TV is here!

Even for a diehard sci-fi junkie like myself (I swear I’m still cool), Len Wiseman’s remake of the 1990 film Total Recall, although exhilarating at times, leaves much to be desired.
