No. 8 Virginia men’s tennis — who secured the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament — cruised to a tournament victory with wins over Miami, Florida State and Duke. The Cavaliers (24-4, 12-0 ACC) defeated the Hurricanes (15-10, 5-7 ACC) in the quarterfinals, the Seminoles (19-8, 8-4) in the semifinals and the No. 2 seed Blue Devils (20-6, 11-1) in the final. The set of victories gives Virginia its third straight ACC tournament victory and has them peaking just as the NCAA championship begins.

On the road for their third and fourth consecutive games, Virginia men’s tennis took down No. 19 Wake Forest Friday and No. 22 North Carolina State Sunday to remain undefeated in the ACC and extend their winning streak to 11 games. The Cavaliers (19-4, 10-0 ACC) had no problems with the Demon Deacons (22-9, 6-4 ACC) in the first game cruising to a 4-0 win, before handling the Wolfpack (13-8, 7-4 ACC).

Coming off a weekend where it swept Miami and Florida State by scores of 4-0 each, No.13 Virginia men’s tennis continued its success with wins over Louisville and Notre Dame. The Cavaliers (12-4, 4-0 ACC) rallied to beat the Cardinals (10-5, 2-3 ACC) 4-2 Friday, before taking down the Fighting Irish (10-7, 1-3 ACC) Sunday by a score of 5-2.

Coming off a disappointing showing in the ITA National Indoor Championships, Virginia men’s tennis looked to turn the page by starting their ACC play with weekend matches against Miami and No. 15 Florida State. The No. 21 Cavaliers (10-4, 2-0 ACC) took care of the Hurricanes (6-4, 0-2 ACC) Friday, before dismantling the Seminoles (8-4, 1-1 ACC) Sunday. Virginia won both matches by a score of 4-0.

Coming off a disappointing loss to Ohio State last weekend, No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis looked to regain some momentum as they traveled to Chicago, Ill. for the ITA Indoor Championships. The sixteen-team field included powerhouses such as Tennessee, Texas, Baylor, Michigan, Ohio State and host Illinois among others.

In a showdown Saturday between two giants in men’s tennis, Virginia took on Ohio State in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (7-2, 0-0 ACC) fought hard until the end but were ultimately overwhelmed by the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes (11-0, 0-0 Big Ten), who continue to dominate their opponents. Falling by a score of 4-1, Virginia moved to 1-2 against ranked opponents on the year, with those two losses coming against top five opponents.

The Virginia men’s tennis team split their most recent weekend matchups, falling to No. 5 Kentucky, but recovering well against Radford. The Wildcats (8-0, 0-0 SEC) proved to be too much for the Cavaliers (7-1, 0-0 ACC), winning a tight battle that was a rematch of last year’s national championship match. However, the Cavaliers held their heads high and bounced back against the Highlanders (0-3, 0-0 Big South) to secure a win last weekend.

After beginning the season with a win at the Streamsong Invitational, No. 5 Virginia men’s golf traveled to Toledo, Ohio Monday and Tuesday to compete at Inverness Collegiate. The team had its work cut out for them in a loaded 16-team field that included NCAA golf powerhouses Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, Washington, Southern California and Texas Tech, the Cavaliers clawed their way to a fourth place finish after a third round charge shot them up the leaderboard. Virginia finished the tournament at 12-over 864, after scoring a 7-under 277 in the third round. Texas Tech won the tournament, shooting an impressive 1-over 853. Georgia Tech and Oklahoma rounded out the top three, shooting 7-over 859 and 11-over 863, respectively.

In the team’s first tournament of the season, Virginia men’s golf finished first at the Streamsong Invitational at Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Fla. taking place Monday and Tuesday.

Virginia women’s lacrosse picked up their second ACC win of the season, edging out Louisville 12-11. The Cavaliers (6-6, 1-3 ACC) went toe to toe with the Cardinals (5-6, 1-4 ACC) in a tightly contested battle to improve to .500 on the season.

Coming off a dominant win against Richmond, Virginia returned to conference play as they struggled against one of their ACC foes in Syracuse. The Cavaliers (4-5, 0-3 ACC) could not find a rhythm on offense, falling behind the Orange (6-1, 3-0 ACC) early, en route to a third straight loss in a tough ACC.

With a loss against No. 16 Notre Dame last Sunday, No. 13 women’s lacrosse was unable to prolong the momentum following their Feb. 27 rout of Stanford. In the early going of the 2022 season, the Cavaliers have been up and down in terms of collecting wins and losses.

Coming off two losses on the weekend, Virginia looked to right the ship against the number one team in the country, Boston College. After putting up a valiant fight early, the potent attack of the Eagles (4-0, 1-0 ACC) proved to overwhelm the Cavaliers (2-3, 0-1 ACC), en route to a 22-15 win Wednesday afternoon.

In their first match-ups of the year, the No. 11 women’s lacrosse team picked up a pair of victories. The Cavaliers went on the road Friday against Elon in their first face-off before returning to Charlottesville Sunday to host California.

Virginia football has had an up-and-down track record when it comes back to its quarterback position. Dating back to the 1990s, the Cavaliers enjoyed decent success with the likes of alumni Matt Blundin, Bobby Goodman, Mike Groh and Aaron Brooks. Most notable was Shawn Moore, who led the program to a No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll for three weeks in 1990, while also racking up a bevy of individual accomplishments that included a first team All-American selection and a fourth place vote in the Heisman race.

Top-ranked Virginia played in the ACC Tournament this past weekend. After a bye in the first round, the Cavaliers (16-2-2, 8-0-2 ACC) played fifth-seeded Clemson Friday night. Though Virginia only scored one goal, that was enough to defeat the Tigers (12-6-1, 6-3-1 ACC) thanks to the defensive performance by fifth-year goalkeeper Laurel Ivory and the Cavaliers’ solid back line.

No. 2 Virginia women’s soccer will look to continue a strong start to the season as they take on No. 8 North Carolina on Sunday. The Cavaliers (10-1-0, 3-0-0 ACC), hoping to establish themselves as the top dog in the ACC, will have to be on their best game to take down the Tar Heels (8-1-1, 1-1-1), who had a stellar start to the season before slowing down in ACC play.

After a 7-1 start in non-conference play, Virginia began ACC play with multiple conference matchups. In the first, a showdown against Wake Forest Sept. 17, the Cavaliers (10-1, 3-0 ACC) made enough plays to hand the Demon Deacons (10-1, 2-1 ACC) their first loss. Virginia then returned to Charlottesville for a highly anticipated matchup against Duke Sept. 23, which it won 1-0 — humbling the Blue Devils (7-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) who had just beat North Carolina for the first time since 2015. Finally, the Cavaliers took the road again on Sept. 26 for an away match at NC State, which they won 2-1 after scoring a 90th minute breaker against the Wolfpack (4-5-2, 0-3-0 ACC).

In its first game after losing star senior forward Rebecca Jarrett, Virginia faced No. 14 Penn State in a ranked interconference showdown. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers (6-1, 0-0 ACC), an efficient Nittany Lions (5-1, 0-0 Big Ten) offense proved to be too much for a usually disciplined Virginia defense.
