After defeating Virginia Tech in an early season showdown, Virginia faced its rivals once again in the regular season finale. The Cavaliers (8-7, 3-7 ACC) continued their struggles against ACC teams, as the Hokies (5-10, 1-8 ACC) won their revenge game on Virginia’s senior night.

In a highly anticipated intra-conference matchup between two top 10 teams, Virginia battled Notre Dame in a game that will prove crucial for ACC tournament seeding. The Cavaliers (8-3, 3-3 ACC) went back and forth with the Fighting Irish (6-2, 3-2 ACC), but an early second-half deficit proved to be too difficult for Virginia to overcome. In a game characterized by long scoring runs from both teams, Virginia came just short of finishing off its late attack, and Notre Dame pulled away with a win.

After COVID-19 abruptly ended the 2020 season, No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse made its highly anticipated return to the field Monday with a showdown against East Carolina. The Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) dominated the Pirates (1-1, 0-0 AAC) and secured a 21-6 victory.

When you think about the most successful women’s lacrosse programs of all time, it is hard not to immediately think of Virginia. Nine NCAA Championship appearances, three tournament championships and five ACC Championships highlights the huge successes of the program. What Coach Julie Myers has done with the program after taking the reins from Jane Miller in 1996 has been nothing short of remarkable. In each of the 24 seasons with a postseason, Myers has guided her team to the NCAA Tournament where they earned 31 tournament wins — good for third all-time in tournament victories and games coached.

Virginia football fell to Virginia Tech 33-15 in the battle for the Commonwealth Cup Saturday night at Lane Stadium. The Hokies (5-6, 5-5 ACC) burst out to an early 27-7 lead against the Cavaliers (5-5, 4-5 ACC) before maintaining the upper hand throughout the second half to bring the Cup back to Blacksburg. Controversial play-calling and a poorly played first half hurt Virginia as the Cavaliers struggled to muster any offense against a solid Hokie defense.

Nonetheless, the stakes for the 102nd meeting between the storied rivals remain high, with the Commonwealth Cup — and the bragging rights that come with it — up for grabs.

Both offenses got off to a slow start, but the Cavaliers (4-4, 3-4 ACC) eventually pulled away from the Wildcats (1-5, 0-0 Southland) to get to a .500 winning percentage for the season so far.

Coming off an impressive Halloween night performance against North Carolina, Virginia football returns to the field hoping to continue its momentum against a struggling Louisville team. The Cardinals (2-5, 1-5 ACC) have won four of the last five matchups against the Cavaliers (2-4, 2-4 ACC). Virginia will look to take advantage of a reeling Louisville team that peaked at No. 18 in the AP Poll earlier this year but has since fallen.

After dropping its third straight game, Virginia football looked to regain its stride against No. 11 Miami Saturday. The Cavaliers (1-4, 1-4 ACC) hung around with the Hurricanes (5-1, 4-1 ACC) in the pouring rain, although a bevy of crucial mistakes allowed a disciplined Miami team to walk away with a victory. Prior to the game, Virginia announced that four non-starting players would be unavailable due to COVID-19 testing, isolation and quarantine.

After starting the season with a win, Virginia football dropped its third straight game at Wake Forest, 40-23. The Cavaliers (1-3, 1-3 ACC) started slow, yet picked up the pace midway through, only to let the Demon Deacons (2-2, 1-2 ACC) slip away in the fourth quarter.

Junior running back Ronnie Walker Jr.’s second appeal for an immediate eligibility waiver has been cleared by the NCAA after Walker’s transfer from Indiana to Virginia in April. The Hopewell, Va. native, who has two years of eligibility remaining, originally had his immediate eligibility waiver denied prior to the season’s commencement. Walker Jr. will be eligible to play for the Cavaliers against Wake Forest Saturday.
