After having its games against VMI and Virginia Tech canceled and postponed, respectively, to start the season, Virginia football is poised to finally open its 2020 season against Duke Saturday at Scott Stadium. The Blue Devils (0-2, 0-2 ACC) come into the season having dropped their first two games against No. 7 Notre Dame and Boston College, only mustering 19 points across the two contests. The Cavaliers (0-0, 0-0 ACC) will open their season with a new face at center in sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who looks to start Virginia’s season with a bang. Last year, the Cavaliers defeated Duke in a 48-14 blowout victory, holding the Blue Devils to just 250 yards of total offense and extending their winning streak against Duke to five games.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s running back corps received a huge upgrade Sunday when 2018 FCS All-American Shane Simpson committed to the Cavaliers over the Texas Longhorns after just four days in the transfer portal. Simpson — a 5-foot-11, 205-pound back who appeared in 35 games for Towson over five seasons — made the decision to transfer after the Colonial Athletic Association decided to cancel the fall football season. As a graduate transfer, Simpson will be immediately eligible for what will be his final collegiate season.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s offense received a coveted commitment Friday morning when former Indiana running back Ronnie Walker Jr. chose to return home and play for the Cavaliers. Hailing from Hopewell, Va., the 5-11, 208-pound running back strongly considered the Cavaliers in the 2018 recruiting cycle before ultimately choosing the Hoosiers. Since Walker Jr. is not a graduate transfer, he must apply for a hardship waiver in order to participate in the upcoming season. Regardless of his waiver status, Walker Jr. will have two years of eligibility with the Cavaliers.

When thinking about Virginia football, it is difficult not to immediately think about former quarterback Bryce Perkins and former cornerback Bryce Hall, athletes who changed the culture of the program. After stellar careers in Charlottesville, both players now look to punch their ticket to the next level — hopefully by having their names called during the NFL Draft later this month. However, after a year where both players had their fair share of unfortunate breaks, uncertainty looms large.

Virginia baseball finished off a sweep of Dartmouth Sunday afternoon, extending its winning streak to five games. The Cavaliers (9-3, 0-0 ACC), powered by an explosive offensive onslaught and a dominant pitching effort, outmatched the Big Green (2-5, 0-0 Ivy League) to win all three games.

After beating rival Virginia Tech for the first time in 15 years and earning a trip to the Orange Bowl to cap off the 2019 season, the future of Virginia football undoubtedly looks bright. With National Signing Day over and Virginia’s 2020 recruiting class solidified, there is now even more reason to be optimistic. Virginia’s class for 2020 ranks ninth in the ACC and 48th nationally, according to 247 sports. While those numbers do not pop off the page, Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s class features players that will have an opportunity to make a significant impact.
