The University announced plans to return to in-person learning April 1, which will be characterized by more normal operations for key parts of University life including housing, dining, libraries, recreation and transportation. After over a year of interrupted operations, this announcement has been long-awaited by many students and faculty.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, much of the vital information that circulated around the Charlottesville and Universities communities was available only in English. Recognizing this, University faculty and students took up an effort to ensure these important resources were made available to all members of the broader Charlottesville community. Now, the University community is working to ensure the language divide doesn’t prevent immigrant and refugee University employees and Charlottesville community members from accessing necessary health information.

The University announced Oct. 22 that they will be replacing the traditional week-long Spring Break with multiple shorter breaks throughout the semester in an effort to limit travel. The intended break days are Wednesday, Feb. 17; Tuesday, March 9; Monday, March 29; and Thursday, April 15, while students are concerned about having to manage an entire semester without extended breaks.

The University’s COVID Tracker reported 321 total cases of COVID-19 in the community Friday, 276 of which are student cases. 39 individuals in the University community — a metric that includes students, faculty, staff and contract workers — tested positive for the virus Friday, marking the single largest daily increase in the community since Aug. 17.

As colleges and universities across the country return their students to campus, many have established trackers or dashboards with the intention of being transparent about the number of COVID-19 cases in their communities. Compared to other universities in Virginia, U.Va.’s dashboard has many similar features — but also lacks some capabilities, such as not reporting the community’s COVID-19 positivity rate.
