The Board of Visitors Committee on the University’s College at Wise met Friday to discuss joint programs between the University and the College at Wise and the growth the school has recently seen, in addition to hearing from a Wise student.

The Honor Committee met for its final meeting of the semester Sunday night. With only 14 members in attendance, the committee did not meet quorum, which requires 19 present members of 28 total. As a result, the committee only reviewed half of its agenda and did not vote on proposed bylaw changes.

The University’s new race, place and equity academic program is finishing up its first semester after successfully implementing 11 classes and funding 10 post-doctoral students. The program aims to provide a better structure for students to learn about race and equity as well as support faculty in teaching about racial equity and democracy.

During a special legislative session Wednesday on Zoom, Student Council’s representative body passed a bill aimed towards obtaining grants for student health insurance loan relief and a resolution denouncing the University's decision to transition all students from Google products to Office 365 beginning in spring 2022.

Following last week's vote on a proposal to reduce the sanction of expulsion to a two semester leave of absence and extend the Informed Retraction until trial, the Honor Committee met Sunday to discuss next steps. During the meeting, the committee heard from community members concerned about the proposal and debated the viability of hosting a new vote on the changes over Zoom in an effort to facilitate greater representative participation.

The Honor Committee voted on a proposal for changes to its constitution Sunday. The proposal — which fell short by five votes — would have reduced the expulsion sanction to a two-semester leave of absence and permitted an accused student to file an Informed Retraction at any point up until their trial.

A cohort of students from the School of Law issued a letter Oct. 6 objecting to the University Police Department’s creation of its Community Oriented Policing Squad, which is charged with monitoring the Corner and adjacent off-Grounds areas. The new UPD unit began patrols Sept. 27.

George Huguely was denied his most recent attempt at appeal by the federal 4th Circuit Court of Appeals last month. Huguely, a former Virginia men’s lacrosse player, was charged with killing Virginia women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love in May 2010.

Former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe visited the University to discuss his current campaign for governor in addition to the importance of requiring vaccines in an event hosted by the Center for Politics Wednesday afternoon. Dr. Cameron Webb — a former Democratic House of Representatives candidate for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District — was also in attendance, along with Board of Visitors member Mark Bowles and vice rector Robert Hardie.

Paul Harris, associate professor in the School of Education and Human Development, announced his decision to leave the University for Pennsylvania State University on Twitter in May. This news came almost a year after he was awarded tenure by the School of Education and Human Development following national outcry and accusations of bias during his tenure proceedings.

COVID-19 prevalence testing numbers have decreased but not due to lack of compliance with University protocol, according to University spokesperson Brian Coy. Rather, the increased availability of vaccines has allowed many students to forgo their weekly testing appointments, which they are eligible to do two weeks after their final vaccine dose.

Take Back the Night at U.Va. organized a virtual event centered around Title IX Monday evening. Members of the organization were joined by Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds in a discussion that focused on interpretations of Title IX in the past and future, ways to stay politically engaged and possible improvements to sexual assault resources at the University. The event is one of two events TBTN is hosting about Title IX, with the second to be held Friday at 5 p.m.

Black Student Alliance and Second Year Council hosted a roundtable discussion with Virginia State Senator Jennifer McClellan and former Congressional candidate Dr. Cameron Webb Monday evening. The event, which lasted from 6 to 7 p.m., encompassed topics including Black identity, voter suppression, minorities in politics and youth engagement.
