2020 has been consequential, to say the least. COVID-19 — a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic — has had painful effects on the economy, revealed structural issues in the American healthcare system and highlighted inequities in education. Movements against systemic racial inequality have been reinvigorated, and wildfires have demonstrated the dangers posed by climate change. All of these variables and more have been recognized by voters across the country as threats to the unity of American democracy. In the midst of this political and social turmoil, students and faculty members have shared their outlook on what voting means to them and why it matters, especially for this Election Day.

As the semester progresses, COVID-19 protocols and safety procedures have been frequently updated to ensure students’ and faculty members’ safety on Grounds. In response to these new adjustments, students share their concerns regarding COVID-19 testing, dining hall procedures, football games and more as they face challenges and struggles adjusting to school.

Following the University’s decision in March to move all courses online and cancel in-person meetings, dozens of student workers were forced to leave their jobs on-Grounds as the University shuttered facilities to comply with COVID-19 protocols. This semester, the University has started to gradually reopen facilities with new adjustments and safety regulations to maintain social distancing. For many student workers, this has put them in unprecedented circumstances.

Since the murder of George Floyd by police, racial injustice movements have spread across the country as millions have taken to the streets to protest in support of Black Lives Matter. These movements — in conjunction with the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus — have garnered significant media and community attention around the world.

A professor is a role model, a mentor and a leader all in one. The University consists of influential faculty members who devote their lives as educators for the growth of the student body. As leaders of the University community, faculty members help pave new roads for future generations by sharing their experiences and wisdom.

The novel coronavirus is a test of humanity’s patience, endurance and immunity as we fight this battle together. However, individuals in the medical field are on the front lines, carrying the rest of the world on their backs. For many emergency medical technician student volunteers at the University, going home is not an option — and not because they are mandated to stay and serve, but because of their commitment to serve as first-aid responders for the Charlottesville community. These EMT students are just like you and me, but they risk their lives in pursuit of a flattened curve.

Your teeth sink into the crispy outer shell that encapsulates the nostalgic cloud of homemade dough, melting like butter on the bed of your taste buds. Unfortunately, not everyone can testify they have felt the same way from a donut. It may be difficult for those who don’t consume dairy or animal products to find this soul-satisfying goodness from a donut compliant with their dietary restrictions. The manager of Glaze, Frederick Early, hopes to create a way to share this goodness with the community despite these preexisting restrictions, striving to bring Charlottesville together one donut at a time.
