Old Cabell auditorium Friday night played host to a concert of the most peculiar sort, titled “TechnoSonics XIII: Music & Politics.” Technosonics, a course started at the University in 2006 by Assoc. Music Prof. Matthew Burtner, teaches students a variety of tools and music composition techniques, analyzing digital music and sound art.

Charlottesville was graced with the psychedelic-rock vibes of Portugal. The Man last Wednesday night. Based in Portland, Ore. but originally from Wasilla, Alaska, the band snaked its way down the coast to tour its sixth album, In the Mountain in the Cloud, eventually making its way to our very own Jefferson Theatre. Since its 2006 debut Waiter: "You Vultures!" the band has recorded six full-length albums, one for each calendar year. Throughout the years, Portugal. The Man has also played more than 800 shows at venues ranging from freight elevators to the stages of Bonaroo, highlighting its passion for live performance. Not surprisingly for these stage veterans, their performance at The Jefferson did not disappoint.

Having a baby changes everything. That's the premise behind Lorne Michael's new NBC comedy Up All Night. The show stars Christina Applegate as Reagan Brinkley, a busy television producer, and Will Arnett as her husband Chris, who is a stay-at-home dad for their newborn baby, Amy. SNL-alum Maya Rudolph plays Reagan's egotistical yet loving best friend Ava, and star of the Oprah-like talk show that Reagan produces. The three veteran actors carry the show, and the result is a better-than-average, refreshingly feel-good sitcom.
