You made it through four years at the University, and you have most definitely procrastinated on a few projects or papers along the way. You have also probably faced the consequences of putting off such work. But sometimes the procrastination pays off, and you end up with a spontaneous, fulfilling product. You might have even realized the extra energy you would have spent if you had done the assignment earlier really would not have been worth it.

Avocado toast has become infamous for being a “basic” breakfast or lunch. What once was innovative back in the 2010s has now simply become an overused brunch item — in the same boat with oat milk lattes, acai bowls and kale salads.

Most weekend mornings I wake up with Bodo’s Bagels on my mind. There is just nothing like bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel when the stress of class and excitement of the weekend has caught up to you — or at least, that’s what I used to think. Now there is a new front-runner for my heart and stomach, and it’s Pico Wrap.

Many students from Northern Virginia have Route 29 memorized like the back of their hand. The scenic Blue Ridge mountain skylines and open farmlands are a comforting reminder I am going home, whether it be to my family in Arlington or to my friends in Charlottesville. The real joy kicks in about midway through, and I am sure most “NoVa” kids already know what I’m talking about. It’s right when you see a little red barn-like building, typically followed by long lines of people and cars in the small town of Remington, Va. Why would they be standing outside on the side of a highway? Ice cream. And not just any ice cream — Moo Thru ice cream.

“I can’t wait until I’m abroad.” These are the words I often told myself in times of stress throughout college. I found myself frequently stating this while struggling through my online financial accounting course, when I was up late writing papers or bored out of my mind at home. The simple words soothed any pain because it created the idea that there was this escape from reality in my future. As much as I love college, my incredibly amazing friends there and my family, sometimes you just need a break.

Food is fuel, but just because you might not be the one playing on the field doesn’t mean you shouldn’t load up for the big game. While I do identify as a sports junkie, I am also a junkie when it comes to food. I’m talking junk food — more specifically, tailgate food. Football games are fun on their own, but they simply feel incomplete without some game-day grub. Fall, football, friends and food just makes sense, and if you’re a crowd-pleaser like me, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got something for everyone at your tailgate. Here are five game-day essentials to make sure your tailgate stays winning while your team does the same.

After first-year, dorms are in the past, and it is time to move on and out. Moving out of a dorm means moving away from the mini-fridge lifestyle. That’s right — it’s time for the big leagues, and by that, I mean a normal-sized refrigerator, equipped with a freezer and all. You’ll also get a full kitchen with an oven and stove top, so microwave meals are in the past. Will this finally be the year you learn how to cook?

Parents and pamphlets can only be so informative about first-year essentials. Luckily, I have some life-saving, commonly forgotten tips — no college counselor could match my expertise. What do you do when it’s been a long night and your stomach is rumbling for grub to soak up the night’s mistakes? Head to Sheetz, obviously.

The University is renowned for its endless traditions that comprise bucket lists for students to complete before they graduate. Whether it be streaking the Lawn, painting Beta Bridge or attending Lighting of the Lawn, there’s numerous tasks to accomplish here. As you fill your bucket list, you might as well fill your stomach too. I am here to supply a lesser-known bucket list solely for Charlottesville food staples. Don’t grab your diploma without dining at these restaurants. All of these restaurants are delicious, as well as wheelchair accessible and affordable.

March Madness brings endless tension, especially at such a prominent basketball school like the U.Va. Numerous feuds begin over seeds, upsets and the coveted perfect bracket. Some might even call it “beef.” In fact, I’ve constructed a bracket to find the superior beef in Charlottesville. I’m talking burgers, of course. With ample options in town, it’s time to establish the best beef in Charlottesville in this battle of the burgers.

As a self-identified foodie, I am all for going out to eat and trying intriguing new dishes. I’m not one to pass up dinner with friends on the Corner, at the Downtown Mall or even on the outskirts of Charlottesville if it means delectable food. If my friends want to test a new restaurant, I’m their go-to dining partner — except on Thursday nights. Anyone who knows me knows that in my kitchen Thursday night means pasta night.

For anyone unfortunate enough to be unfamiliar with the holiday, Galentine’s Day is on Feb. 13, the day before the well-known, overly mushy day of love. Rather than partaking in the commercialization of Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day is an opportunity for “ladies celebrating ladies,” as the “Parks and Recreation” character Leslie Knope puts it. It’s a day to show appreciation for your girlfriends, so you may as well indulge a bit — you know, to express your love.

It is no secret that coffee is a college essential, but what is a little more hidden are the underlying personality traits of your coffee shop of choice. A cup of coffee is not as simple as it sounds, as your cup of joe can differentiate you from being an “average joe” to someone more complex. Where you choose to splurge on a latte or cappuccino instead of your mediocre Keurig coffee says more about you than you may think.

Fall is notorious for pumpkins and the excessive addition of pumpkin spice to just about anything, but what is often overshadowed is the delicacy of squash. Sure, pumpkin seeds are a delicious snack when roasted, but what else can feasibly be made from the actual pumpkin? In my house, pumpkin bread is typically made from a mix to avoid any kitchen disasters, and I believe pumpkin spice lattes hardly count as real pumpkin flavoring. However, spaghetti squash is insanely easy to roast yourself and is full of naturally sweet flavors.

The first few weeks of school have passed, which is plentiful time to realize that dining halls are not the most ideal spot to curb your hunger. While their locations and unlimited access to first-years may be convenient, the same cannot be said for their provided food options. Fortunately, there are a multitude of meal exchange opportunities for students on Grounds.

It is no secret that starting college can be stressful. Even at the beginning of the school year, when classes should merely be introductions and coursework should be minimal, there is still the additional anxiety of moving in and making new friends. In times of such stress, I have one confidant that has followed me all the way to college and continues to heal all worries — ice cream. Not only does the sweetness distract from the pressures of first year, but it is also an ideal indulgence for the summer humidity and heat of old dorms.

As a first-year college student, there are two essential things lacking in my life — quality food and money. My stomach craves a taste that cannot be satisfied by the elementary flavors of O-Hill, but unfortunately my bank account does not agree with my appetite. I often head to a dining hall and stack up plates of various options, hoping my odds of trying something decent will increase if I sample it all. However, this is quite wasteful, and I tend to wind up unsuccessful in my search for better-than-average food.

To some, March 14 may just be another spring day, but for math geeks and dessert lovers, it is a day of great relevance. Known as Pi Day, March 14 is an excellent excuse to binge on pie, rather than celebrate the numerical value of pi — 3.14. The Pie Chest, a pie shop on the Downtown Mall, extended the holiday this year and made the week of March 12-18 “Pie Week.” Each day included different giveaways or specials, so I decided to treat myself and indulge in some sweet treats.
