The Virginia women’s basketball team has not recorded a win thus far in the 2020-21 season, and the team’s struggles haven’t been limited to the court. The Cavaliers (0-5, 0-2 ACC) have yet to pose any sort of threat towards their opponents, which has left them ranked 14th out of 15 teams in the ACC.

After losing to East Carolina Sunday, Virginia women’s basketball faced James Madison in its second home game of the season Thursday. After a solid start, the Cavaliers (0-3, 0-0 ACC) fell behind and a late game comeback was not enough to beat the Dukes (2-1, 0-0 CAA).

The 2020-21 women’s basketball season kicked off in lackluster fashion for Virginia, as the team fell to the defensively talented Central Florida 60-34 Wednesday night away in Orlando, Fla. The Cavaliers (0-1, 0-0 ACC) started the game with high energy and an early lead, but ultimately could not keep up with the Knights (1-0, 0-0 ACC).

Virginia Athletics reported zero positive COVID-19 test results out of the 1,138 tests administered to student-athletes and athletics staff between Nov. 16 and Nov. 22. This maintains the athletics department’s positivity rate at 0.8 percent. This is the second week in a row that Virginia Athletics has reported no positive tests among both student-athletes and staff.

The women’s basketball season is quickly approaching, and Virginia is eager for a fresh start and new identity. The 2019-20 season was subpar — Virginia finished with a 13-17 overall record including a 8-10 record in the ACC. With Coach Tina Thompson entering her third season with the team and the prospect of five new recruits and two transfer players, the Cavaliers hope to rewrite the narrative and prove that they can be a successful program.

No. 10 Virginia will match up against Louisville in the first round of the ACC Championship Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers (7-2-1, 5-2-1 ACC) are ranked third in the tournament bracket and hope to hand the sixth-ranked Cardinals (4-4-0, 4-4-0 ACC) a season-ending loss.

Virginia Athletics reported two positive COVID-19 results Monday over the 1,038 tests administered between Oct. 26 and Nov. 1. The positivity rate for tests conducted last week was 0.2 percent, but the overall positivity rate including all tests administered since July 5 is 0.9 percent.

Four Virginia student-athletes and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of the 939 tests administered between Oct. 12 and Oct. 18, Virginia Athletics announced Monday. The positivity rate for tests conducted last week was 0.4 percent while the overall positivity rate since student-athletes began returning to Grounds July 5 is 1.1 percent.
