A federal judge in Maryland ruled in favor of Chartis Property Casualty Company Monday in a lawsuit the insurance company filed against former University student and lacrosse player George Huguely. The insurance company sought to dispute the claim that they were obligated to provide Huguely insurance coverage in a related civil lawsuit.

Two organizations and 11 community members filed a lawsuit Monday in the Charlottesville Circuit Court against the City of Charlottesville and members of City Council over the Council’s recent votes to remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from Lee Park and rename the park.

The University Center for Politics welcomed Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) Thursday to speak at an event for the centers’ Leaders for Democracy Fellowship program. Northam, who is running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, addressed the 23 fellows and students in attendance on his accomplishments in office, policy priorities and aspirations for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The University’s Black Law Students Association won Chapter of the Year at the National Black Law Students Association’s 49th annual convention held March 7-12. Chapters from 80 law schools attended the convention held in Houston, Texas.

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee met Friday morning and approved proposals to increase dining contract rates and students, faculty and staff housing rates. The University’s investments, assets, workforce and budget were also discussed.

Over 30 people gathered at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center Monday night to discuss proposed plans for the Memorial for Enslaved Laborers at the University. The memorial is an initiative of the President’s Commission on Slavery and the University to commemorate and raise awareness about its history with enslaved labor.

University alumnus and former football player Merrill Robertson Jr. received renewed attention over allegations of conspiracy to commit fraud Feb. 10, when a fellow alleged conspirator referenced him in a confession. Robertson was indicted in October 2016 on several accounts of fraud and illegal monetary transactions.

University alumnus Martese Johnson’s lawsuit against the former Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control director of enforcement and two ABC agents underwent a new development Feb. 14 when the defense filed a motion for compliance from the plaintiff to provide adequate information for the trial.

Charlottesville City Council passed a motion Monday to remove the Confederate statue of Robert E. Lee from Lee Park. The decision passed with three votes in favor of the removal and two against.

Hundreds of people gathered on the Downtown Mall Tuesday for a rally in front of Charlottesville City Hall. The event, initiated by Mayor Mike Signer, was a response to President Trump’s executive order, “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States.”

The Virginia House of Delegates passed House Bill 1842 Wednesday allowing the proof of grain alcohol permitted to be sold in government stores to be raised from 101 to 151. Eighty-three members of the House voted in favor of the bill while only 14 members cast opposing votes.

The University has seen a large number of protests over the past three years, responding to topics ranging from sexual assault to divestment to the presidential election. Next week, protests will continue as the Inter-Sorority Council hosts the University March for Women, related to this weekend’s Women’s March on Washington. But protest at our school is not new: student activism has played a prominent role on Grounds throughout the University’s history.

The University Hospital will receive reductions in federal funding for the 2017 fiscal year due to high rates of Hospital-Acquired Conditions. The hospital ranked in the worst-performing quartile of hospitals evaluated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services through the Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program, or HACRP.

The 16th annual Lighting of the Lawn focused heavily on inclusivity as thousands of students and members of the Charlottesville community gathered to listen to live performances and await the illumination of the Rotunda and Academical Village. The event drew an estimated 13,000 people as well as an additional 5,200 who watched from a livestream new to the event this year.

A group of alumni formed The Great Mr. Jefferson Essay and Scholarship Foundation, Inc. following a letter sent to President Teresa Sullivan signed by University faculty and students that criticized her inclusion of a Thomas Jefferson quote in her post-election address to the student body.

Local Charlottesville businesses are beginning to prepare for Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year. The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally known for long lines and crowds of customers, but on the Corner, businesses are preparing for a quieter atmosphere and more navigable traffic that draws customers.
