In the Nahuatl language, “flower and song” is nearly synonymous to poetry — “in xochitl in cuicatl.” Fernando Valverde, a native Spanish speaker, literary icon and distinguished visiting professor, believes the value of life comes not from wealth, but from these two simple components. From reading poetry written by others to writing his own poetry, Valverde has found remarkable success in his journey to become exactly what he thinks a poet is — a nightingale singing in the darkness.

As a result of the ongoing pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, the University has decided to cancel the Hong Kong portion of its January term study abroad program in order to ensure student safety.

Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society organized an event Monday night in the Multicultural Student Center to discuss climate politics in Brazil and Bolivia surrounding the burning of the Amazon forest. Anthropology Professors Sonia Alconini and George Mentore were joined by History Professor Brian Owensby and members of PLUMAS. Around 20 people attended the event.

When the University first opened its doors in 1825, only white men from wealthy backgrounds could walk the Lawn. Exactly 68 men comprised the first cohort of students to attend the University, alongside 8 faculty members.

It’s the atypical office romance — late deadlines, cutting and pasting headlines and resisting the Oxford comma to abide by AP-style guidelines. It’s the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s — dozens of young college students are bonding in The Cavalier Daily office over sleepless nights. While covering Watergate, President Hereford’s election and even facing the University administration’s shutdown of the paper, some staff members also found their lifelong partners among their companions in the office.

The Community Relations Committee and the Legislative Affairs Committee of Student Council held a forum with the Charlottesville City Council candidates Monday night in Garrett Hall. Over 20 students and community members came to hear about the positions of the candidates on several issues in preparation for election day on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The University’s Office of Sustainability and Virginia Football are hosting their annual Green Game at Scott Stadium this Saturday. In addition to competing against Duke University in football, U.Va. is also competing against other colleges across the nation as part of the Gameday Recycling Challenge, an initiative to reduce waste by increasing recycling and composting at football games.

The University’s Homer Statue, built by Jewish-American sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel in 1907 as the “Blind Homer With His Student Guide,” is currently under restoration on the South Lawn and is expected to be completed this week.
