With kickoff in Pasadena just two weeks out, let’s take some time to talk about expectations for the Virginia football team’s 2015 campaign. In four months time, which win-loss records will leave us satisfied with the season, and which will leave us ranting on Twitter about the hole into which the Virginia Athletics Department has dug our proud fanbase?

Last weekend, the FIFA Women’s World Cup championship game that pitted Team USA against Japan brought in over 25 million viewers, a United States record for any soccer game, men’s or women’s. Given the vast popularity advantage men’s sporting events typically enjoy over women’s events, this statistic fascinates me. To put it bluntly and honestly, there really aren’t many Americans who would call themselves a women’s soccer fan.

In a post-game interview Monday night that was nearly lost in all the hullabaloo surrounding Duke and Coach K’s fifth national championship win, Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan took an interesting jab at the Blue Devils’ program, saying, “We don’t do rent-a-player.”

The Virginia men’s basketball team ended its season in heartbreaking fashion Sunday, which naturally elicited some pretty strong emotions from within. Of course, I can’t get upset with the ‘Hoos. However, I can get upset with the Tournament Selection Committee for seeding the No. 23 Spartans seventh in our region, senior guard Travis Trice for making ridiculous shots at the beginning of the game to put us down early and my annoying little cousin for rubbing the loss in my face.

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection committee is a cruel, terrible organization.

With selection Sunday less than three weeks away, let’s see how well you really know the best teams in the country. Do you trust that little number next to a team’s name when you watch them on TV? Do you turn to KenPom each week to feel like a more sophisticated college basketball fan? Or maybe you watch a dozen games a week and have your own solid opinions on which teams are good and which aren’t.

When the Virginia basketball team lost junior guard Justin Anderson to a finger injury a week and a half ago, I wasn’t sure what to think. Obviously losing a player ranked second on the team in points per game and third in minutes per game is not a positive. But given our system-based offense and defense, I was hopeful the damages would be minimal.

This past weekend in sports was one of the worst for me in a long time. The Virginia basketball team lost in a heartbreaker to Duke, and the New England Patriots — my least favorite team in football — won its fourth Super Bowl in 13 years.

There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics. And when it comes to Virginia basketball, traditional statistics horribly misrepresent the team’s actual performance.

With the Virginia men’s basketball team halfway through its regular season, it’s time for a definitive ranking of the team’s MVP up to this point. I asked a few of my friends, and I got several answers. That’s understandable. With a team this deep, the question becomes somewhat difficult.

The No. 3 Virginia field hockey team moved to 3-0 in the ACC Friday night with a tough-fought 3-1 win against No. 10 Syracuse. The Cavaliers followed up the performance Sunday with an 8-0 victory against winless Vermont, extending their winning streak to eight games.

The defining events of the 2013-14 year include widespread response to changes to AccessUVa, a seemingly endless search for new deans, the passage of the University’s Cornerstone plan and heightened administrative intervention in University fraternities’ new member education — or “pledging” — processes.
