It has been more than two years since Bayside High rising senior Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell committed to Virginia — shutting down offers from North Carolina and West Virginia — and affirmed the Cavaliers’ considerable influence in southeastern Virginia’s Hampton Roads region. Now Virginia’s third-leading rusher and most prolific receiver out of the backfield, Mizzell was a five-star recruit per Rivals.com, the Yahoo!-based outlet for collegiate football and basketball recruiting at the time.

Virginia’s 34-20 loss to Florida State Saturday night in Tallahassee will not shake the earth. The Cavaliers remained in contention against the Football Bowl Subdivision’s No. 2 team into the back end of the fourth quarter — making enough plays to prevent a blowout, but not enough take the night by its throat. The Seminoles came out on top for the 26th time in 26 games. It’s as simple as that.

Redshirt senior tight end Zachary Swanson has two touchdowns in his Virginia football career. The first came two years ago, when he gloved a short pass from quarterback Phillip Sims as time expired at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Cavaliers lost that game 56-20 — Virginia “got smacked,” according to Swanson — and the officiating crew brought the proceedings to swift conclusion.

The Virginia football team rushed for 22 yards on 16 carries Saturday afternoon at Georgia Tech in the Cavaliers’ final game before a trip to No. 2 Florida State. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets racked up 268 yards on the ground while running the football 63 times. Redshirt senior A-back Synjyn Days led the charge, producing 147 rushing yards on 24 carries.
