Tuesday night in Richmond, the Virginia baseball team won a rollercoaster ball game against Virginia Commonwealth, 5-4, on junior center fielder Brandon Downes’ 10th-inning solo home run. The No. 1 Cavaliers (34-7, 16-5 ACC) bounced back from Sunday’s loss to North Carolina despite blowing a one-run lead in the ninth inning.

The Virginia baseball team Tuesday night defeated in-state rival James Madison 9-3 in Harrisonburg — Virginia’s second win against the Dukes in 2014. The No. 1 Cavaliers (28-5, 12-3 ACC) were powered at the plate by sophomore right fielder Joe McCarthy and junior left fielder Mike Papi, who each swatted a home run and finished the game with four RBI.

The Virginia baseball team set a sprinter’s pace early on in its 2013 regular season, winning 14 consecutive games to start the year. During their streak, the Cavaliers bested multiple opponents simply by swinging the bats. Virginia scored 14 runs against East Carolina in its season opener, 15 in a shutout of Toledo and 23 combined in a Saturday doubleheader with Bucknell and Harvard.

Freshman right-hander Alec Bettinger made the second start of his collegiate career Wednesday night when the No. 2 Cavaliers drew swords with the Longwood Lancers before a small legion of fans at Davenport Field. Bettinger made the most of his opportunity on the mound, and sophomore third baseman John La Prise — who started for just the eighth time this year — came through for Virginia (20-4, 7-2 ACC) at the plate, spurring the Cavaliers to an 8-1 victory.

Virginia junior second baseman Branden Cogswell led off the bottom of the first inning of the No. 5 Cavaliers’ Thursday afternoon game against Princeton with a groundball that rocketed off the lip of the infield grass for a surprise single. He accepted a free pass from junior right-hander Nick Donatiello to lead off the third. Two innings later, he squared up a second base hit — once more in Virginia’s first at-bat of the frame.

Many of the people directly involved with Virginia baseball — from the grounds crew to the coaching staff and ballplayers — went to uncommon lengths to keep the team’s Wednesday night game against Towson from becoming another scheduling casualty. After a snowstorm hit Charlottesville Sunday and Monday, the conditions at Davenport Field looked decidedly iffy.

A day after defeating the Eagles (6-12, 0-6 ACC) by a seven-run margin, the No. 5 Cavaliers (15-3, 5-1 ACC) twice prevailed by one run in walk-off fashion.
