In a sweeping victory for affordable housing advocates, Charlottesville’s City Council unanimously voted to approve the development of two high rise apartment complexes near Grounds Monday night, despite voiced opposition from the University. The Council also passed a new zoning ordinance to increase housing density throughout the city.

The Board of Visitors’ Buildings and Grounds Committee tabled a proposal to rename the University’s main library during Thursday’s Buildings and Grounds Committee session. While the issue will reappear on the upcoming Board meeting agenda in March, the building will open Jan. 8 as Alderman Library.

1, 15, 41 — three numbers splashed across the front of hundreds of t-shirts, lovingly etched onto the side of Beta Bridge and formed with sticky notes upon dozens of dormitory windows. They are the jersey numbers of University students and football team members Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler — three students who were killed in a shooting on Grounds one year ago.

Kenyon Bonner, the current vice provost for student affairs at the University of Pittsburgh, will join the University this January as the new vice president and chief student affairs officer, per an announcement sent Tuesday from the University. Bonner replaces Interim VPSA Christopher Holstege, who took over in the role after Robyn Hadley left in July.

A man was found dead after officers responded to a call Thursday afternoon at the University Hospital parking garage on 11th Street. One suspect has been charged with voluntary manslaughter — police say there is no active safety threat.

Class of 2004 alumnus Darren D. Kelly will join the Office of African American Affairs Oct. 2 as the associate vice president and dean. Kelly brings extensive teaching and mentoring experience to implement a student-focused approach, according to an announcement from Student Affairs.

Three hand-painted stars climb a column of the University’s Beta Bridge above the large “Forever in our hearts” lettering emblazoned across the orange wall. Nestled in the heart of the University’s student community, the bridge’s mural still features hundreds of scrawled Sharpie messages like “Rest in power,” “You will never be forgotten” and “U.Va. Strong” in remembrance of the three students who died in a Nov. 13 shooting.

Live music wafted up Elliewood Tuesday evening as fourth-year students carried their student IDs and fourth-year cards down familiar stairs for the long-awaited reopening of popular local bar Coupe DeVille’s. After almost two years of closure following a kitchen fire and delays in construction, the bar surprised fourth-years with exclusive access to a private concert — the $20 tickets sold out in under a minute.
