Travis Maxey, a 40-year-old Virginia resident, was arrested as a suspect of grand larceny that occurred around 11:49 a.m. in 11th Street Garage near the University Hospital, per a release from the University Police Department. UPD obtained a warrant after the suspect stole a purse from a car and fled the area.

Several people have been indicted on charges of burning an object with the intent to intimidate during the Aug. 11, 2017 torch-lit march down the lawn at the University. These indictments are part of an active criminal investigation connected with the march and the following “Unite the Right rally” that shook Charlottesville almost six years ago.

A break-in was reported at the Kappa Delta House on Chancellor street early this morning. The suspect — 18 year-old Harry Benjamin Sedwick Jr. — has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual battery and one count of burglary. He is currently being held without bond.

Traditional West African scarves and booming steel drums filled the Newcomb Ballroom during the anniversary of Liberation and Freedom day — the March 3, 1865, liberation of thousands of enslaved laborers in Charlottesville. The event — originally scheduled to take place by the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers but moved inside due to rain — included vibrant performances by the Chihamba drumming group and the internationally-acclaimed Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters.

The Charlottesville Police Department responded to a shots fired incident near the Red Roof at 10:05 a.m., per a community alert sent Tuesday morning by Timothy Longo, chief of the University Police Department and vice president for security and safety. The suspect — 44-year old Albemarle county resident Billy Sites — was shot by officers and later died.

The Charlottesville Police Department responded to a shooting incident Saturday at 9:52 p.m. near 1000 Grove Street, per a community alert sent Saturday evening by Timothy Longo, chief of the University Police Department and vice president for security and safety. One fatality was reported and police are continuing to investigate.

The Board of Visitors’ Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee met Thursday from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to discuss the results of the past financial year’s audit and compliance goals for the upcoming year. Focuses of the meeting included changes to U.Va. Health protocol following the predicted end of the COVID-19 public health emergency as well as the lack of central authority for audits across divisions.

Students, faculty, administrators, community members and families filled John Paul Jones Arena Saturday afternoon to honor the lives of the three victims and two students injured in Sunday’s shooting. Held at 3:30 p.m., the memorial service included musical selections, prayers, reflections from close friends and a poignant moment of silence.

In a short video released Wednesday evening, University President Jim Ryan shared details of a memorial service to be held honoring the lives of D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler, as well as the two students confirmed to have been injured in Sunday’s shooting, Cavalier football junior running back Mike Hollins and second-year Marlee Morgan.

Christa Acampora found her love for higher education during 20 years of teaching across multiple states and, after expanding into administrative roles, joined the University in August as the Dean of the College and Graduate school of Arts and Sciences. A native Virginian, Acampora found the mountains calling her back home to professors and faculty at the University — where she hopes to foster a sense of community among students.
