The Virginia men’s basketball team announced in a press release Monday sophomore point guard Teven Jones would transfer from the program to seek playing time elsewhere.
NEW YORK — At some point, the Virginia men’s basketball team’s luck had to run out. They had won an ACC regular season title, an ACC Tournament championship and had made it to the Sweet Sixteen, extending one of the most successful seasons in the program’s recent history.
The No. 1 seed Virginia men’s basketball team just scraped by in their opening round game of the NCAA tournament, beating No. 16 seed Coastal Carolina 70-59 in an 11-point game that felt nothing like an 11-point game. The Cavaliers will have little time to dwell on the game, though, as they face No. 8 seed Memphis Sunday.
RALEIGH, N.C. — A No. 1 seed has never lost to a No. 16 seed — that much had been reiterated over and over again before the Virginia men’s basketball team opening game in the NCAA Tournament against Coastal Carolina. But as the team went into halftime down 35-30, that fact was looking slightly less safe.
The Virginia men’s basketball team won an ACC regular season title, an ACC Tournament title and locked up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament Sunday. With all these achievements behind them, the Cavaliers have a little time to rest on their laurels — right? Senior forward Akil Mitchell summed up the reality in five words: “You don’t know Coach Bennett.”
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tony Bennett had been asked so frequently by the media about Wally Walker that it had become a running joke. The Virginia coach was well aware that it had been nearly 40 years — 38, to be exact — since Walker’s Cavaliers had won the ACC Tournament, and his team had the first opportunity to match the 1976 team’s feat since their last ACC tournament appearance in 1994.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Up 51-48 with nine second left to play in their ACC semifinal game against Pittsburgh, the Virginia men’s basketball team’s lead was not looking particularly safe. A 4-0 Panther run had cut the game to one point before redshirt sophomore Anthony Gill’s two free throws put the team up three points.
GREENSBORO, NC — Joe Harris said going into the postseason that he wanted to be more aggressive on offense. If Friday’s debut game in the ACC Tournament was any indication, the senior guard meant it. Scoring early and often, Harris led Virginia with 20 points and help guide the Cavaliers to their first ACC Tournament semifinal in nearly 20 years, beating Florida State 64-51.
As the final seconds ticked off the clock and No. 12 Virginia sealed the ACC regular season title with a 75-56 win against No. 4 Syracuse, the Cavalier players dutifully headed for the locker room. For a team coached by the unflappable Tony Bennett, it was just another win — its 13th straight win — but there was still more work to do.
It is fair to say Wednesday night’s game against Miami was not the first thing on the minds of fans of the No. 12 Virginia men’s basketball team. Looming all year has been Saturday’s matchup against No. 4 Syracuse, and it has been hard for observers of the program — fans and writers — to ignore.
Midway through the second half of the No. 14 Virginia men’s basketball game against Notre Dame, the Cavaliers once again found themselves tied in a close ACC game, 43-43. It was reminiscent of the team’s game against Clemson and Virginia Tech; Virginia had failed to achieve much separation from the Fighting Irish all game, but once again, the Cavaliers flipped the switch, reeling off a 25-0 run to seize control of the game.
With less than four minutes to go in the Tuesday night road game against Virginia Tech, the No. 14 Virginia men’s basketball team trailed 46-42 and was staring down an embarrassing defeat to its hated rival.
The No. 17 Virginia men’s basketball team escaped with a 63-58 win on the road against Clemson Saturday. Behind 16 points from senior guard Joe Harris, the Cavaliers improved to 21-5 and 12-1 in the ACC.
With just more than 12 minutes to go in Monday’s game at John Paul Jones Arena, Maryland junior guard Dez Wells hit a jumper to tie the game at 35-35. In its fourth game in nine days, the No. 16 Virginia men’s basketball team was struggling to make any headway against the Terrapins.
A huge second-half run helped the No. 20 Virginia men’s basketball team avoid a disappointing road loss against Georgia Tech. Down 44-42 with just less than 10 minutes to play, the Cavaliers outscored the Yellow Jackets 22-1 down the stretch to take a 64-45 win.
Coming off an emotional win against No. 25 Pittsburgh, the No. 20 Virginia men’s basketball team faced a possible letdown game against Boston College Wednesday night. A late Eagles rally cut a 21-point lead to just six with less than a minute to play, but the Cavaliers hung on for a 77-67 win.
Redshirt sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon nailed a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left on the clock as the Virginia men’s basketball team posted its most important win of the season thus far, a 48-45 nail-biter on the road against No. 18 Pittsburgh. Brogdon finished with 16 points in the Cavaliers’ first victory against a ranked opponent this season.
Virginia football coach Mike London added Mike Archer to his staff Thursday as a defensive assistant coach, the team announced in a press release. Archer — an assistant at the school from 1991 to 1992 under George Welsh — was most recently the defensive coordinator at North Carolina State from 2007 to 2012 under current Virginia associate coach Tom O’Brien.
Much ado was made heading into the season about the Big East’s invasion of the ACC. Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame all joined with the intention of breaking up the traditional Duke-UNC power structure, and through the early goings, it seemed effective. Syracuse is undefeated so far, and before a home loss to Duke Monday night, Pitt was holding firm in second place.
