The Virginia men’s basketball team is off to a surprisingly successful start in this season’s conference play. The last time the Cavaliers were 6-1 in ACC play was in 1983, when Virginia legend Ralph Sampson was in his senior season and the team made the Elite Eight.

Monday’s win for the Virginia men’s basketball team was utterly workmanlike. The Cavaliers’ opponent never truly troubled them in the second half, and looking up and down the score sheet, there was no clear star — just a coordinated, complete win. It was just another win for a team on an impressive roll, a cut-and-dry affair to send the crowd home happy.

Virginia really had no business being competitive in its game Monday night against Duke. Shooting just 38 percent from the field against a hot-shooting Blue Devil team, a halftime deficit became even bigger in the second half, but the Cavaliers managed to stick around. With 6:21 to go in the second half, Duke led by 13 points at 56-43, and it seemed lucky that that was the whole margin.

The Virginia football team announced Jan. 6 that safeties coach Anthony Poindexter and defensive line coach Vincent Brown would be leaving the team. Both will be taking positions at Connecticut under newly hired coach Bob Diaco — himself a former Virginia assistant coach between 2006 and 2008.

The Virginia women’s basketball team won its third straight game Sunday, topping Princeton 69-57 to win the Cavalier Classic for the tenth consecutive year. Senior guard Kelsey Wolfe led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds.

One week ago, the Virginia women’s basketball team won just their second game in seven tries. Saturday, the Cavaliers won their second straight game, topping Coppin State 70-45 in the first round of the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville.

With two and a half minutes to go in Virginia’s Wednesday night game against No. 8 Wisconsin, the Cavaliers picked up a rebound and brought the ball down the court looking to start something — anything, really. Senior guard Joe Harris went to the rim for a layup and missed. Senior forward Akil Mitchell corralled the offensive rebound and went up for his own layup — it missed.

When No. 8 Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan steps on the court at John Paul Jones Arena Wednesday to face coach Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers, he will be seeking his 300th win with the Badgers. But more than a decade ago, the two coaches shared the court in a different context, when Bennett coached under Ryan in his very first win.

Buoyed by huge efforts from sophomore reserve forwards Justin Anderson and Mike Tobey, the Virginia men’s basketball team cruised to an 83-63 win Saturday against Missouri State to win the Corpus Christi Challenge in Texas. The pair combined for 37 points and eight rebounds to erase an early deficit and lift the Cavaliers to their sixth straight victory.

With less than two minutes remaining in the first half of Saturday’s season finale against Virginia Tech, Virginia senior defensive tackle Brent Urban and freshman linebacker Max Valles broke through the Virginia Tech offensive line and delivered a punishing hit on Hokie senior quarterback Logan Thomas. The ball skirted free, and Urban fell on it to give the Cavaliers possession on their opponent’s 34-yard line. Trailing 9-6, the Cavaliers had a chance to go into halftime with a lead against their hated rival.

Just more than five minutes into the second half of the Virginia men’s basketball game Saturday against Liberty, Flames senior guard John Caleb Sanders hit a 3-pointer to bring his team within nine points at 40-31. The Flames had hung close with the Cavaliers all day, and looked much more impressive than their 1-3 record implied.

Just a minute and a half into the Virginia men’s basketball team’s game against Navy, Midshipmen sophomore center Will Kelly hit a jumper to tie the game at 2-2. A minute later, Virginia sophomore center Mike Tobey hit a baseline jumper off a slick pass from senior guard Joe Harris to break the tie, and the Cavaliers would never look back.

The Virginia rowing team closed out its fall season in nearby Earlysville, Va. Sunday, picking up two wins at the Rivanna Romp. The team hosted boats from Louisville, Oklahoma, Old Dominion, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The No. 12 Virginia men’s soccer team received a No. 8 seed to the NCAA tournament and a first round bye Tuesday. Virginia will host the winner of a first round matchup between Delaware and St John’s at Klöckner Stadium Sunday.

After a disappointing 59-56 loss to No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth Tuesday, the No. 25 Virginia men’s basketball team went to North Carolina Saturday looking for redemption. The Cavaliers found it against Davidson as sophomore center Mike Tobey led the way with 18 points and 7 rebounds in a 70-57 win.

Virginia’s most prominent sports team may be mired in a seven-game football losing streak. But for the teams operating outside of Scott Stadium, the fall has been highly successful. The women’s soccer and field hockey teams this week received bids to their respective NCAA tournaments, and the ranked men’s basketball team played one of its most anticipated games in years Tuesday night against Virginia Commonwealth University.

One shot was all there was time for. Virginia Commonwealth junior guard Treveon Graham corralled a pass from fellow guard Rob Brandenburg and heaved a desperation 3-pointer from what seemed to be 30 feet out. He sunk it, and broke a 56-56 tie with just 1.4 seconds left on the clock.

In the midst of a six-game losing streak, the Virginia football team entered its matchup against North Carolina looking for answers. Instead, they left once again wondering what went wrong as the Tar Heels completely dominated the game en route to a 45-14 win.
