Coming into fourth year, I made a list of things I wanted to do before graduating from the University. Arguably, the most important component of that list was the subsection that included a checklist of restaurants I had to try before leaving Charlottesville. I’ve been slowly checking restaurants off my list, but high up on that list that I had yet to try was Passiflora, located at 422 E. Main Street on the Downtown Mall.

The Bebedero is one of those classic University restaurants students are always eating at — with its large portion sizes and delicious cocktails, The Bebedero attracts students, new and old. After changing locations from 225 W Main Street to 201 W Main Street, the restaurant’s patrons were eagerly anticipating the opening of the new location to see what it had to offer.

Since setting foot on Grounds as a new, fresh-eyed first year, I’ve known Roots as a staple in the University community. Founded in 2015 by two University graduates, Roots has become well-known for their affordable, healthy and delicious signature salads. Although they have a number of signature bowls that have gained popularity across Charlottesville and some other cities, my personal favorite has always been the Pesto Caesar.

Located just outside the Downtown Mall, Bang! is an Asian-inspired tapas restaurant with a vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan-friendly menu that, unfortunately, does not take reservations. Well-known among students for its delicious food and unique drinks, I decided to visit Bang! to see if it was worth the wait.

When the beloved coffee shop Corner Joe location shut down, students were left wondering what could replace the homey café that many had come to rely on for a warm cup of coffee and an ambient place to study. Luckily, in its place is now Pie Guy Coffee.

As soon as the holiday season rolls around, there is an increase in the number of food banks, food drives and donation-based fundraising that pop up, making this the perfect time to think about ways that you can give back to your community. Elementary and high schools alike hold yearly food drives that encourage students to donate in any way they can — regardless of what the actual item is.

What better way to wake up than with a warm cup of coffee? Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, and its popularity is reflected through the immense amount of coffee shops that have popped up all around Charlottesville. Coffee and coffee shops serve as warm pick-me-ups in the middle of the day and gathering places for students looking for an ambient place to get some work done.

During the fall, nothing is better than a warm bowl of soup, a cozy blanket and a Halloween movie. The feeling of a delicious soup warming you from the inside out is simply unmatched. Soups can be a great side — pair it with a baguette, salad or sandwich for an easy and delicious meal — but it can also be a meal by itself — just throw in some protein and vegetables and you will be warm and full for the rest of the night.

This past month, U.Va. Dining announced that they would be welcoming four new dining locations to Grounds. Although the dining halls offer a variety of foods, I think we can all agree that sometimes you need something other than Newcomb chicken and O’Hill coffee. However, most of the time, you don’t want to have to pay for all your meals if you are already paying for a meal plan.

Throughout finals season approaches, students sought ways to minimize the time they spend on activities unrelated to studying. Unfortunately, it can oftentimes be easy to forgo the things that actually sustain our wellbeing like healthy food, sleep and daily movement. It’s natural to want to reach for greasy and high sugar foods that will give us a momentary burst of energy — but those foods inevitably cause us to crash. However, healthy and filling snacks will actually nourish both our bodies and our brains, giving us the energy we need to push through finals week.

Pasta is one of my favorite foods. Honestly, I could eat pasta every day for the rest of my life –– from spaghetti bolognese to mac and cheese or penne alla vodka. However, sometimes you might want to add a little variety to your meals and substitute your normal pasta noodles for something a little bit healthier. As a self-proclaimed pasta fanatic, I have searched for the best pasta alternatives, and I’ve narrowed my findings down to three options that never seem to disappoint.

As the fall semester came to a close, I — along with many other students — found myself in a cooking rut. The search for an easy, filling and delicious meal gets more tedious with every passing day, and I find myself reverting to the same boring and bland chicken and vegetable meals.
