Ask any self-respecting Virginia student who our rival is and they will undoubtedly answer, “Virginia Tech, of course.” Now, I love beating the Hokies just as much as the next person, but in my four years at the University I’ve noticed that, to most students, Virginia Tech seems to be our only rival. What I want to know is: why not UNC?

The No. 3 Virginia men’s basketball team’s quest for a second straight ACC Tournament title came to an end Friday evening in a 71-67 loss against No. 19 North Carolina in Greensboro. The loss was the second in three games for the Cavaliers, who claimed their second consecutive ACC regular-season title earlier this month.

Despite having to forfeit a singles point and a doubles court due to multiple players coming down with the flu, the No. 5 Virginia women’s tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season Thursday night with a 4-3 win against No. 42 Utah.

Closing out its 2014 home schedule, the Virginia volleyball team hosted Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh this past weekend. The Cavaliers defeated the Yellow Jackets, 3-1, Friday evening before falling against the Panthers, 3-1, on senior day Sunday afternoon.

In the latest edition of the Commonwealth Clash, the Virginia volleyball team fell against rival Virginia Tech Friday night, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20). The Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 lead but proceeded to drop the next three sets, splitting the season series with the Hokies after a comeback 3-2 win Oct. 12 in Blacksburg.

In its final event of the fall, the No. 16 Virginia women’s golf team placed fifth in the 18-team field at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, North Carolina this weekend. The Cavaliers shot 8-over 872 at the three-day tournament, including 6-over 294 in the final round.

Sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi of the Virginia women’s golf team took first place this weekend among all individuals at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. With a 54-hole total of 7-under 209, Diaz-Yi finished four shots clear of runner-up Vanderbilt senior Kendall Martindale to record her first collegiate victory.

Two days after knocking off No. 1 North Carolina on the road, the No. 3 Virginia field hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime Sunday afternoon at home against Ohio State. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ (10-3, 4-0 ACC) nine-game winning streak, a run which included several wins against top-15 teams.

The No. 12 Virginia men’s golf team finished in sixth place Tuesday at inaugural the Primland Collegiate Invitational. Through the two-day, 54-hole tournament, the Cavaliers shot a 19-under 845.

The Virginia women’s golf team placed sixth among 15 teams in the Mason Rudolph Championship this weekend at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Cavaliers had a three-day total of 30-over 894, shooting rounds of 297, 298 and 299. Tournament host Vanderbilt, ranked No. 11 in the preseason by Golfweek, finished in first place at an even par 864, 11 strokes clear of runner-up LSU.

In the first tournament of the season, the Virginia women’s golf team finished in a tie for fourth place Tuesday at the Cougar Classic. Shooting a 4-under 284 in the final round in Hanahan, South Carolina, the Cavaliers closed at 3-under 861, a score also held by Mississippi State.

While most other students were in class Tuesday afternoon, the No. 9 Virginia field hockey team was on the field facing Miami (Ohio) in its second home game of the season. Coming off a 6-4 win against then-No. 7 Princeton Sunday, the Cavaliers (3-2, 0-0 ACC) posted their second shutout of the season and downed the RedHawks (0-5, 0-0 MAC) 3-0.

The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team fell 4-3 on the road Thursday afternoon against No. 20 Iowa. The loss comes on the heels of a 3-0 defeat against No. 8 Penn State on Sunday, and the Cavaliers have now lost consecutive regular season games for the first time since 2011.

Virginia sophomore women’s tennis player Danielle Collins made her mark on history this past Memorial Day, defeating California freshman Lynn Chi 6-2, 7-5 in the NCAA Singles Final to become the first ever Cavalier women’s player to win the singles title. No one from Virginia had ever reached the quarterfinals or further before this season.

In the last home regatta for the team’s 15 seniors — a count including captains Elle Murray and Emily Pik — No. 5 Virginia swept all nine races in Saturday’s U.Va. Invitational against Michigan State and No. 17 Syracuse. The Lake Monticello meet was the last for the Cavaliers before the ACC Championships in May.
