The Virginia volleyball team’s first season under coach Dennis Hohenshelt last year was not an easy one. With effectively only 12 players available for much of the season — severely limiting depth at most positions — the team stumbled to a 9-22 record and a dismal 3-17 in the ACC. But the return of an injured veteran and the arrival of seven new players should allow the team to erase the bad memories of 2012 and become serious contenders in the conference.

With the 2013 season nearing its end, the Virginia softball team prepares to bid farewell to a legend. This player has led the team through highs and lows, setting an example for others to follow. She holds nearly every major Virginia career pitching record, leaving her mark in the books and in the hearts of her teammates and coaches. Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell is the face of a program, and has made Virginia softball a nationally-recognized name.

The Virginia softball team suffered its third consecutive ACC series sweep this weekend, dropping three games to NC State by a combined score of 22-1 in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers lost 10-1 and 10-0 in a doubleheader Saturday and then fell 2-0 Sunday for their ninth consecutive conference loss.

At the plate, the Cavaliers tallied 19 hits and had a team batting average of .388. On the mound, senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell broke the Virginia all-time record for career wins with 75.

The No. 7 Virginia men’s lacrosse team seeks its second win to open the year when it takes on visiting Virginia Military Institute Tuesday evening in a battle between the Commonwealth’s only two Division I teams. Virginia has won all 18 meetings between the two schools, cruising to a 19-5 home victory in last year’s game.
