In March, the National Football League acknowledged for the first time the link between head injuries sustained while playing football and the development of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that results in the gradual deterioration of the brain and is associated with memory loss, confusion, impaired judgement, aggression, depression and dementia. The disease is thought to be caused by repeated concussions and injuries to the brain.

Studying impoverished children in Bangladesh, Dr. Jeff Donowitz, infectious disease specialist at Virginia Commonwealth University and infectious disease fellow at the Medical School, was the head researcher of a two-year-long study that found the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine likely causes a stunt in growth, cognitive delays and possibly the failure of several oral vaccines.

Through the Hospital Education Program, the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital offers art therapy as a way to provide patients with a creative outlet throughout their treatment and healing process. Though art therapy seeks to benefit children in the midst of medical care, the program also produces an exciting amount of original artwork.
