My great aunt Barbara was a wonderful cook. She had a recipe box chock full of delicious homemade dinners and treats. One of my favorite recipes that my mom recently discovered while rifling through the box was her “Best Lemon Refrigerator Cookies” recipe.

I tried my first Iron Paffle about a year ago, and I was pleased, but not impressed. The first paffle I tasted was savory with fried chicken, arugula, mac and cheese and aioli. The waffles themselves were good, but the filling left me wanting more in terms of flavor and texture. Based on my first encounter, I wouldn’t have chosen to return to Iron Paffles & Coffee myself.

As the leaves begin to change and the temperature starts to drop, there's nothing like a warm drink to sip on the way to class. Coffee is great but expensive, and too much of it can give you the jitters. A great substitute that is cost-effective, delicious and low-calorie is tea. I’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to your perfect cup of tea and included a few of my favorite types and suggestions.

Nothing pulls together a gathering like a cheese plate. The mix of flavors and textures never fails to impress. I’m a huge cheese plate fanatic, and I’ve experimented with many a combination. Below are some of my favorite assortments that will go wonderfully with any occasion.

Summertime dining is all about fresh produce, bright flavors and clean eating. One of my all-time favorite dishes is pesto pasta. This comfort food is well-suited for the colder months, but I decided to shake it up and make my own version that is a bit more summery — pesto zoodles.

Fry’s Spring Station, located conveniently on Jefferson Park Avenue, is the perfect place to take your family or friends for a delicious dinner that isn’t too fancy. The restaurant is near Scott Stadium and the Gooch-Dillard dorms meaning that it’s never quite as chaotic as the restaurants on the Corner. This locally owned and operated Charlottesville favorite is a must try for all University students, especially those graduating this May.

The newest addition to the vibrant Belmont food scene, Junction, is a phenomenal mix of familiarity and innovation. Junction is also the newest restaurant opened by Adam Frazier, local restaurateur and owner of the The Local in Belmont. Junction offers a variety of Southwestern inspired dishes using fresh and often local ingredients.

Armando’s, the newest restaurant to open on the Corner, is the perfect place to indulge in endless chips and salsa. Located on 14th Street, right next to Basil, Armando’s is especially attractive because it is much closer to all the action on the Corner than Guadalajara, Mono Loco or El Jaripeo. The food is affordable and really great quality for the price. I predict Armando’s Mexican Restaurant will be an instant success.

The Downtown Mall is a staple of the city of Charlottesville. Its beautiful brick pedestrian walkway is lined with shops and restaurants of every kind. As a child, two of my favorite places on the mall were Chaps Ice Cream and Splendora’s Gelato. Deciding between the two was always the hardest part of my night, but I’ve finally made my choice

Cup Noodles are a savior of college students everywhere. The warm, delicious and somewhat filling meal is easy to make and easy on the wallet. But the classic Cup Noodles — the ones sold in every grocery store and gas station — isn’t always the healthiest option. So, I wanted to explore the world of ramen noodles beyond the styrofoam cup. I found four different types of chicken ramen noodle soup and set up a comparison on five different fronts: taste, price, cooking time, sodium content and calorie count.

As a Charlottesville native, Red Pump Kitchen has been a staple in my rotation of favorite dinner venues since its opening in 2014. The Mediterranean-Italian menu provides delicious, upscale comfort food with a dash of creativity and decadence. Some personal favorites are the kale caesar salad and the margherita pizza. The salad is well-dressed and surprisingly full of texture for a bowl of greens. The thin, crisp crust on the pizza contrasts beautifully with the tender, milky mozzarella. I’ve been consistently satisfied with my dinners at Red Pump, though it is a bit pricey for the typical college student’s budget.

Eggs are a central element of every shopping list. They’re versatile, cheap and delicious. You can have your eggs fried, baked, hard boiled, over easy — there are so many ways to enjoy this simple dish. I ate a lot of eggs back home, and I found myself missing that component of my daily breakfast when I arrived here at the University. Yes, they have “eggs” at Newcomb, Runk and O-Hill, but I soon found myself craving more than the same scrambled and hard boiled styles day after day. I knew I was minutes away from delicious egg filled breakfasts — I just had to find them.
