Shannon Wells, previous associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida, will join the Cavaliers as their next head coach, Director of Athletics Carla Williams announced Monday. This announcement comes following last month’s decision to release all members of the volleyball staff due to a “personnel matter.”

Virginia Athletics reported one positive COVID-19 test amongst a batch of 1,068 tests administered to student-athletes and staff April 19 through April 25. This cuts the positivity rate to 0.09 percent after reporting a 0.2 percent positivity rate last week. Additionally, since the department began testing in July, the overall positivity rate is 0.7 percent — equivalent to a total of 221 positive tests out of 33,734 tests administered.

Virginia traveled to Richmond on Tuesday to play VCU at The Diamond, dropping the midweek contest 5-3 in the first meeting of the season for these two teams. After giving up an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of play, the Cavaliers (17-18, 9-15 ACC) came up short despite making it a one-run game in the eighth.

Louisville and Virginia were pitted against one another in a three-game weekend series in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (17-17, 9-15 ACC) won the first matchup, but the Cardinals (22-11, 14-6 ACC) took the last two in an impressive fashion.

Virginia and William & Mary faced off April 6 in what turned out to be a 7-6 thriller. The Cavaliers (16-15, 8-13 ACC) ousted the Tribe (6-17, 3-6 CAA) in a back-and-forth battle at Disharoon Park. Virginia then traveled to Clemson for a three-game weekend series where it would lose the first game but win the final two.

The Virginia baseball team is just over halfway done with its regular-season slate — having played 28 games so far — and there’s a lot to reflect on. The Cavaliers are tied at an even 14-14 and their performances have been inconsistent, to say the least. As the team heads into the remainder of the season, it will be important for them to find their footing in sticky areas and maintain the pace in strong areas.

The Cavaliers continued their long stretch of games at Disharoon Park this past weekend against No. 19 Miami. In the first game, Virginia (10-13, 4-11 ACC) lost 8-6 after recording 13 offensive hits. The Cavaliers evened the series in the second game after senior left-hander Andrew Abbott pitched an extraordinary eight innings. Virginia would then go on to lose the final game 4-2 after neither team recorded a walk or a hit by pitch.

In the most recent installment of Virginia baseball’s midweek matchups, the team faced Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. The Cavaliers (9-11, 3-9 ACC) were unable to overcome a deficit that began in the first inning and ultimately lost to the Flames (14-5, 3-0 ASUN) by eight.

The entire Cavalier coaching staff has been relieved of its coaching duties, effective immediately, Virginia Athletics announced Thursday. This includes Coach Aaron Smith, Assistant Coach Joe Klein, Director of Volleyball Operations Kelsea Kalich and Nikki Daily, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

In a game Tuesday against George Washington, Virginia dominated from the start. The Cavaliers (5-3, 1-2 ACC) scored in all but two turns at-bat, meanwhile, seven of their pitchers would hold the Colonials (0-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10) to zero earned runs.

The Cavaliers bounced back from a tough weekend in the ACC pod with one game against James Madison and three games against George Washington. Virginia (6-5, 2-3 ACC) lost its first and only game against the Dukes (2-0, 0-0 Colonial Athletic Association), but rallied in the second game of the day to beat the Colonials (0-4, 0-0 Atlantic 10). The Cavaliers would also beat the Colonials twice the following day.

In a three-game weekend series in Chapel Hill, N.C., Virginia was only able to win one as North Carolina put on a strong pitching performance. Thursday, the Cavaliers (4-3, 1-2 ACC) lost 3-2 after only driving runs in during the eighth inning. The results of the second game were no better, as Virginia dropped the competition 2-1. In the third game, the Cavaliers finally shined and beat the Tar Heels (6-1, 2-1 ACC) with a final score 3-2.

Virginia opened its spring slate Friday in a last-minute match against Old Dominion. The Cavaliers (2-8, 0-8 ACC) won all three sets by margins of 11, six and four, respectively, and handed the Monarchs (4-4, 2-2 Conference USA) their fourth loss of the season.

Virginia baseball wrapped up its four-game homestand Tuesday against Virginia Military Institute. The Cavaliers (3-1, 0-0 ACC) would fall behind the Keydets (0-1, 0-0 Big South) at the beginning but would steadily regain momentum throughout the game and overpower them in the end.

No. 14 Virginia opened its season at Disharoon Park on Friday evening with a 2-1 win against UConn as pitchers on both sides put on dominant performances on the hill. The Huskies came in and managed to outscore the Cavaliers by just one in the second game, with a final score 10-9. In the final game of the series, Virginia bounced back and won 4-2.
