Spectrum Theatre staged the first of four performances of “Fun Home” Oct. 19, bringing the moving musical to an audience of friends, family members and fellow University students in the Student Activities Building. Spectrum is an independent student-run organization which aims to provoke dialogue through theatre, and “Fun Home” is a perfect fit for this objective, focusing on themes surrounding family, memory and queer identity.

On a warm Saturday in a bright, low-ceilinged space beneath the Downtown Mall, a group of local creatives convened for the first-ever Charlottesville Zine Fest. The organization had been building to this event for over a year — connecting artists, consolidating resources, staging workshops — as part of an ongoing mission to strengthen and showcase Charlottesville’s growing network of zine-makers.

Director and activist Boots Riley appeared at the Violet Crown Tuesday for a screening of his upcoming show “I’m a Virgo,” offering students and community members a preview of his newest project and insight into his creative process. The event was presented by the Virginia Film Festival, U.Va. Arts and the Office of the Provost and Vice Provost for the Arts and was free for University students.

Operating out of a snug studio one mile west of the Rotunda, University students are on the air from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily on 100.1 FM. WXTJ is the University’s freeform student radio station, and it’s been a beloved home to student DJs for nearly 10 years.

The Ruth Caplin Theatre was buzzing with student filmmakers, collaborators and supporters Monday evening as attendees of the Overcranked premiere settled into a semicircle of seats wrapped around an empty thrust stage. A blank projector screen hung from the ceiling in its center. There was a brief introduction, a minute of breathless applause and then the lights went down and the screen lit up with the first short film of the night.

The University might not have a film department, but it offers many outlets for its young artists, from disparate classes in different departments to student organizations on Grounds. Still, there is one standout program that consistently attracts motivated filmmakers at the University.

Alex O’Connor was 17 years old when he released his self-produced debut album on digital streaming services. At 23, adolescent originality continues to permeate his work. “WHO CARES?” is his fourth studio album, and O’Connor — widely known by his stage name, Rex Orange County — is still moody and musing.

The fourth Thursday in November is coming up, and it’s time for many of us to vacate Grounds and face several consecutive days of intense family time. This might be your first visit home since the start of the semester, or it might be your hundredth. You may have left school early to maximize your vacation, or you may be hanging around the largely deserted University during your time off. Some find the holiday comforting, others stressful.
