The ACC released each one of their constituent team’s schedules for the upcoming 2023 football season earlier last week. Among them was that of the Cavaliers, who find themselves at a crucial crossroads in program history and especially in the tenure of Coach Tony Elliott. Many questions were raised at the end of the season and the team is looking for answers.
The woes that have lurked over conference play for Virginia (14-8, 3-8 ACC) continued Sunday with a 72-60 loss to rival No. 13 Virginia Tech (17-4, 7-4 ACC) in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash at John Paul Jones Arena. The most recent loss plunged the Cavaliers into a four-game losing streak as Coach Amaka “Mox” Agugua-Hamilton and her team seem to be drifting further and further from their prime performance early in the season.
With a pair of games over the weekend against Minnesota and East Carolina, Virginia women’s basketball had a chance to continue its hot start to the Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton era in Charlottesville and stay undefeated. After a narrow win against the Golden Gophers (4-2, 0-0 Big Ten) Saturday and a dominant victory over the Pirates (5-2, 0-0 AAC) Sunday, the Cavaliers did just that.
Coming off of a disappointing fourth-place finish at the Inverness Collegiate, Virginia men’s golf ventured up to Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, N.Y. Monday and Tuesday for the Hamptons Intercollegiate and cruised to a win. Meanwhile, after earning a third-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate, Virginia women’s golf traveled to Highland Park, Ill., for the Windy City Collegiate Classic where they struggled to a seventh-place finish.
