MAN, THIS is one violent country we live in! From video games to movies to music, one can't help but encounter extreme violence in popular media at least once a day. We may not want to admit it, but a large portion of the U.S. public loves carnage, at least in pretend form. The situation has gotten so bad that President Clinton ordered a Federal Trade Commission study of the issue. The results are now upon us.

IT SHOULD surprise no one that Axl Rose said it best. And though he was referring to critics of Guns 'N Roses rather than presidential debate politics, the message retains its meaning today: "Get in the ring." The controversy over each candidate's willingness -- or lack thereof -- to participate in debates is just another manifestation of the serious, but too often minimized differences between the two sides.

I CAN'T believe I'm writing this column. Let me rephrase that: I can't believe I only have one year left at the University. After all, I vividly remember that fateful day in August, 1997 when my family dropped me off at Page dorm. Apparently that was three years ago. And while I only have one more year to taste the sweet life that this University offers, I can pass on what I've learned in my five semesters as a student here. In this issue of The Cavalier Daily, there undoubtedly are other columns devoted to what material things you should bring to Charlottesville for your first year. With that in mind, I prefer to take a look at some of the non-material aspects of University life that will make or break your first year.

I'VE GOT A secret. It's something the American media doesn't want you to know, but I'm going to tell you anyway. Here it is: The real dividing line in our country is not race, but class. Of course, the fact that there is no giant racist machine dividing America into color-coded castes is not a very spicy story. Racial conflict sells.

WHEN MOM and Dad tell you to be careful, they mean it.

THIS WHOLE thing is like a bad record that just keeps playing over and over and over again. It seems that some people - and their enabling parents - feel that simply because you try to hunt someone down like an animal, and proceed to assault him, somehow you still deserve to be a student at this school.

THEY ARE patriotic Americans. I can appreciate that. They are fervent anti-Communists. I can appreciate that. They anxiously await Fidel Castro's fall in Cuba. I could not agree with them more. But I don't know who in the world these people think they are to take Juan González's son away from him.

IN A LANDMARK Supreme Court decision last Tuesday, March 21, the justices ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have the proper authority to regulate tobacco as a drug. While this viewpoint is questionable, given nicotine's obvious addictive qualities,

IT IS almost an American political tradition. Every four years, the opposition candidate will vow to "get tough" on China. President Clinton criticized President Bush in 1992 for "being soft" with the Chinese. Bob Dole did the exact same thing to Clinton four years later. And you can be sure that Texas Gov. George W. Bush (R) will use a similar attack against Vice President Gore.

THEY'RE an interesting thing, these primaries. Above all, it's fascinating that in the age of television and the Internet, politicians still must go around the country, campaigning from state to state as if they were snake oil salesmen traveling on the carnival circuit. One of the most fascinating things about primary politics is that it offers parties a chance to choose someone electable, rather than a figurehead for the party's agenda.

WE ALL HAD one of those toys when we were little. You remember: that circular toy where you point the arrow in the middle, pull the string, and the toy would play back a brief sound clip from a nursery rhyme or children's song. It was a lot of fun to hear "Old McDonald had a farm," and "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall," when we were little kids, but eventually it got old.

FOR ALL the talk of the freedoms we enjoy in this country, we often neglect to mention one of the most important -- the freedom to be weird. Fortunately, one Jonathan Taylor Spielberg was kind enough to drive this point home to the rest of us. Spielberg claimed to be the nephew of the famous director, and apparently received free admission to a Fairfax, Virginia private high school. He would hand out $10 bills to fellow students. Even though he rarely attended class, Paul VI's administration was so enamored of their new student, they allowed him to park his BMW coupe in the principal's own parking spot.

IT HIT me on the Beltway. In one brief moment, the naked greed of the NFL confronted me full-force. I had just missed my exit to the Landover Metro station in suburban Maryland. My brother Greg and I were headed to FedEx Field to see the Redskins take on the Miami Dolphins. Though the game meant nothing to either team in playoff terms, both of us were very excited because the 'Skins were in the postseason for the first time since I was in junior high school.

BUENOS AIRES--All good things must come to an end they say, and unfortunately that is also the case with this semester abroad. A lot of stuff has gone down here in Argentina, and hopefully it has influenced me and my fellow students in a positive way.

BUENOS AIRES--There is a certain point in each study abroad semester, I believe, when everyone begins to feel a bit run-down by their host city, and home doesn't look quite so "boring" anymore. I don't know if I've come that far, but I'm getting pretty close. Not to imply that I'm not enjoying my time here, but this city is beginning to run out of things for me to do on a consistent basis.

BUENOS AIRES-The first two weeks in a foreign country can seem like a long, long time. You have to take in so much information in such a brief period, making the days seem like they drag on forever. But then you turn around and an entire month has gone by. And at this point in the semester, the weeks are, unfortunately, flying by.

BUENOS AIRES--Well, I finally made it down here. Long flights, like the one from Miami to Buenos Aires, always allow time for some personal reflection, particularly if you are traveling by yourself.

IT'S NOT too far off, that time of year when parents and children say goodbye, and the University welcomes its newest class. Several thousand students will begin their college careers in Charlottesville. Among these, many will know exactly what they want to do at the University; others will have no clue. But there is one think that most first years will have in common: They will start drinking--heavily.
