Just a week after winning its first ACC tournament title in program history, the No. 7 Virginia field hockey team saw its NCAA run come to a sudden halt. After winning their opening game against No. 10 Michigan, 2-1, the Cavaliers (16-8, 3-3 ACC) lost to No. 14 Princeton, 3-2.

Fresh off of an ACC Tournament title, No. 7 Virginia looks to continue its fine form in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The final was the Cavaliers’ (15-7, 3-3 ACC) first finals berth since 2009. It was also the first ACC title ever in field hockey, an impressive accomplishment.

The Virginia field hockey program won its first-ever conference title Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C. at Wake Forest’s Kentner Stadium. The championship was the culmination of a few impressive stats, including the No. 7 Cavaliers’ (15-7, 3-3 ACC) first ACC final since 2009, and — as the sixth seed — being the lowest-seeded team ever to win the conference tournament.

No. 8 Virginia suffered another disappointing defeat Tuesday in its 2-1 loss to No. 3 Maryland (14-3, 6-1 Big 10). The Cavaliers (11-7, 3-3 ACC) dominated the game but were once again unable to get the result. The game had a similar feel to the 3-2 overtime loss to No. 6 Louisville Friday.

No. 9 Virginia suffered its sixth loss of the season Friday night in Charlottesville to No. 7 Louisville. The loss snapped an impressive three-game winning streak and eliminated any path for the Cavaliers to secure a share of the ACC regular season title.

Junior midfielder Tara Vittese had yet another impressive performance as No. 9 Virginia won its third straight game. The victory over Richmond marks the Cavaliers’ (11-5, 3-2 ACC) seventh win in its last eight games. Vittese had two goals and two assists and was involved in every one of Virginia’s goals in its 4-1 win over the Spiders (6-8, 4-2 A-10).

The No. 10 Virginia field hockey team recorded its most impressive win of the season to date, a 1-0 overtime win over No. 2 Syracuse. Senior midfielder Lucy Hyams scored the game-winner four minutes and 30 seconds into the first overtime period. The goal came off of a corner. Junior midfielder Tara Vittese provided the game winning assist.

The No. 10 Virginia field hockey team beat William & Mary 3-2 Tuesday night to add on to their winning record. The Cavalier (9-5, 2-2 ACC) win followed a disappointing 3-2 overtime loss to No. 3 North Carolina, and is Virginia’s fifth win in six games. Prior to the successful stretch, the Cavaliers suffered the worst defeat of the season in an 8-0 loss to No. 1 Connecticut.

Junior midfielder Tara Vittese had another impressive week for No. 10 Virginia. Not only was she instrumental in helping the Cavaliers defeat two ranked teams, she was honored as the ACC Field Hockey Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Furthermore, she was named to the 18-man travel roster for the U.S. U-21 Junior World Cup. The World Cup begins Nov. 24 in Santiago, Chile.

The pair of games this last past Friday and Sunday was incredibly important for a Virginia team that was previously struggling. After suffering an 8-0 loss to No. 3 Connecticut (10-0, 2-0 AAC), by far the worst of the year, the No. 16 Cavaliers (6-4, 1-1 ACC) needed to respond strongly. With expectations high coming into the season, especially since the team returned all but one player, many performances have been underwhelming.

Following a third consecutive week with both a win and loss, the next few games will test No. 16 Virginia. The Cavaliers (4-4, 0-1 ACC) again sit at .500 on the year. Their last loss, to No. 4 Connecticut, was the worst of the year. Down 2-0 at half, the Huskies (7-0, 1-0 AAC) exploded in the second half to end up winning the game 8-0.

For the fourth weekend in a row, the Virginia field hockey team won one game and lost the other. No. 14 Virginia (4-4, 0-1 ACC) has underwhelmed so far this season after starting the year ranked fifth in the country and returning all but one player.
