The University’s Board of Visitors discussed the College at Wise’s 10-year strategic plan and growth in both enrollment and endowment, approved an academic and health systems audit plan for the 2021-2023 fiscal years and provided updates on the University’s transplant center and COVID-19 response during a series of meetings Thursday.

With the University planning to resume in-person operations in the fall, the majority of students took their final exams virtually for the last time this semester. Professors and students shared concerns for cheating with online finals and are anticipating a return to in-person final exams.

The University chapter of United Campus Workers of Virginia launched its premier graduate student campaign entitled Respect and a Fair Deal for Graduate Workers on May 1, International Workers Day. The organization is calling for improved working conditions for graduate students through clear terms of employment, a living wage and better healthcare.

Following the March 16 Atlanta Spa Shooting, the University community — including Asian student organizations, University administrators and faculty members — responded to the increase in anti-Asian violence with statements denoucing the xenophobic sentiments such violence represents. Sylvia Chong, associate professor of American Studies and English and founder of the Asian Pacific American Studies minor, titled her statement “UVA in solidarity with victims of anti-Asian violence.” Since then, students in the University’s Asian American community have continued to express sentiments of profound anger, sadness, frustration and serious concern over the country’s increase in anti-Asian violence.

Second-year students have now spent the majority of their time at the University online, necessitating regular adjustments to changing challenges while trying to navigate life as a college student in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While applying into majors and sustaining a social life are among the many obstacles students have faced this year, many feel more comfortable with the situation when compared to their feelings last March.

Researchers at the University’s School of Medicine recently published an article in the scientific journal Circulation Research that decodes the genes related to coronary artery disease. The study enabled researchers to better understand CAD’s genetic risk factors and to discover a gene with potential applications to treating it.

A team of researchers at the University School of Medicine recently published an article in the Journal of Biological Chemistry about their study of HIV fusion to cell membranes using cryo-electron microscopy. The study determined the initial steps of HIV infection in cells — information that can be applied to understanding the infection process of other viruses including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that leads to COVID-19 infection.
