After a severe blow suffered at the hands of Illinois last weekend, Virginia football returned to Charlottesville to take on in-state opponent Old Dominion for the second time since 2019. The Monarchs (1-2, 0-0 SunBelt) — facing the other half of the Commonwealth Cup rivalry after defeating Virginia Tech two weeks ago — almost managed to pull off the upset, yet senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong’s last minute heroics propelled the Cavaliers (2-1, 0-0 ACC) to victory. With the first ACC game on the horizon, Virginia secured a must-win game even amidst a trend of uncharacteristic mistakes.

Despite high hopes for a second win over Illinois in two years, the Cavaliers found themselves overwhelmed and out of whack en route to a 24-3 loss on the road. Virginia senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong — even with the bevy of proven wide receivers at his disposal — struggled in an unusual showing after recording two interceptions and zero touchdowns. Altogether, the Cavaliers (1-1, 0-0 ACC) seemed unrecognizable from the team which dominated the Fighting Illini (2-1, 0-1 Big Ten) 42-14 in 2021, with too many uncharacteristic mistakes plaguing them along the way.

College football is right around the corner, and Virginia is hoping to regain its footing in the ACC Coastal Division after reaching the conference championship in 2019. Despite a mediocre 6-6 record in 2021, the Cavaliers have managed to retain several key stars all while entering the first year in the tenure of new Coach Tony Elliott — formerly the offensive coordinator at Clemson.

Winning in Cameron Indoor Stadium is no small feat, and the 10-54 all-time Virginia record against Duke in their home venue proves it. However, thanks to a little magic from Reece Beekman, the Cavaliers (15-9, 9-5 ACC) did the impossible and knocked off the talented Blue Devils (19-4, 9-3 ACC) — a team who had beat then No. 1 Gonzaga and now No. 5 Kentucky.

After a promising win against Louisville, the Virginia men’s basketball traveled to South Bend to take on Notre Dame, a team that has vastly exceeded expectations this year. The Cavaliers (11-8, 5-4 ACC) — who had formerly held an 11-game winning streak in the Wolfpack’s (10-10, 3-6 ACC) home arena — succumbed to the three-point shooting success of senior forward Jericole Hellems and freshman guard Terquavion Smith. Albeit in defeat, junior guard Armaan Franklin paced the Cavaliers with 14 points while sophomore guard Reece Beekman showed promise once again on both sides of the ball.

Despite the loss, junior guard Armaan Franklin shouldered the offensive burden with 18 points and showcased a shooting prowess that Virginia fans have not often seen this year.

After an ugly home loss to Clemson, Virginia looked to start the new year on a high note against a familiar foe in Syracuse. The Cavaliers (8-5, 2-1 ACC) — who led for the majority of the game — dissected the Orange’s (7-6, 1-1 ACC) patented zone defense that Coach Jim Boeheim has been engineering for years. With passing at the forefront of the game plan, senior guard Kihei Clark dished out eight assists and notched 17 points – both season-highs - as he weaved through the 2-3 zone. Three other Cavaliers alongside Clark ended the game as double-digit scorers and showcased the offensive parity of a team that has regularly struggled from the field.
