Barrio Fiesta — meaning “neighborhood celebration” in Spanish — showcased the diverse cultures and backgrounds of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans at the University Saturday. In a day filled with music, food, art and theater, the Organization of Young Filipino Americans delivered a cultural exhibition that encompassed the spirit of community that the organization embodies.
The University hosted its third annual Out of the Darkness walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Sunday. This year, 60 people participated in the walk, which began at the Amphitheatre, and over $3,000 was raised to support the cause.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar calendar, is a time of fasting, prayer and reflection for the Muslim community. At the University, practicing Muslim students have carved out their own space to celebrate the holiday and forge a community that supports one another.
Members from various Native American nations across Virginia, including the Monacan, Powhatan and Chickahominy tribes, gathered together to celebrate their Indigenous cultures at the University Saturday. A thundering drum performance from the Red Clay Singers signaled the beginning of the Powwow. Performers adorned in traditional regalia dispersed throughout the Amphitheater and danced along to the powerful rhythm. The Native American Student Association’s Powwow put Virginia’s Indigenous communities on center stage with a remarkable show of pride and solidarity.
Have you ever had a beignet? They are the French cousin to our all-American doughnut with thin crusts and cushy middle — a doughy, hand-held carbohydrate dream. If you haven’t tried one yet, I suggest French-styled bakery Cou Cou Rachou as a fine place to have your first.
Take It Away, a long-standing Corner staple which opened in 1992, is home to a warm collection of smiling faces, customizable sandwiches, delectable house dressing and a beautiful variety of chips and drinks. Sandwiches are one of my favorite foods — they remind me of being at home in Virginia Beach, sitting on the beach and eating my favorite Taste Unlimited sandwich. When I first started at the University, I was in desperate need of a sandwich that compared to the ones I know and love at home. Take It Away has gone above and beyond to satisfy this need in my life with an unmatched turkey sandwich and an upbeat atmosphere that makes me feel welcomed every time I order.

The University of Virginia Medical Center was ranked the No. 1 hospital in Virginia in Newsweek’s annual “World’s Best Hospitals” guide. The Medical Center also ranked 42nd overall across the nation with a composite score of 70.83 percent, maintaining its ranking from last year’s list.
For over a century, Girl Scout Cookies have been sold door-to-door across the United States in a campaign to develop independent, socially conscientious young women. Going from early February until late March, the cookies are sold by Girl Scouts, with all proceeds going back into sustaining their local programs. I recently tried some of the newest cookie flavors to provide my personal recommendations on the classic snack.
