As we move into the thick of the semester, I am sure we are all tired and overwhelmed. I hope you can find some solace in knowing that we are all in this together. We can definitely do this — but let me complain first.

I think my love for caffeine started sometime in middle school, when I would wake up to the aromatic scent of freshly brewed coffee from my older sister. At the time, she was in high school — an age my parents deemed old enough to drink coffee. Even though she was told not to, she would let me sneak sips of her coffee in the mornings as long as I kept it under wraps. I didn’t know it at the time but that slow introduction to coffee as well as caffeine set the stage for what I now refer to as my big fat caffeine addiction — and yes, that is totally a play off of the movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

After a string of thefts around first-year dormitories, the University Police Department is performing extra patrols around all on-Grounds housing areas. The decision comes after several bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters have been stolen from the racks outside dorm buildings within the past few weeks.

As many as a third of COVID-19 survivors that did not require hospitalization now face long-term symptoms. A subset of “long-haul” COVID-19 patients have been diagnosed with a form of autonomic dysfunction. To combat this, two University Medical Center physicians — pediatric infectious diseases subspecialist Dr. Ina Stephens and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Dan Schneider — recently established a pediatric autonomic dysfunction clinic in the University Medical Center’s Battle Building.

The start of this academic year marked something bigger for me than it has in years past — it marked the beginning of my fourth year. I will be honest in saying that it feels rather surreal that I am in my last year of college. My first three years at the University went by much faster than I could have ever imagined.

It was the crack of dawn … Well, not really. It was actually the ungodly hour of 7:30 a.m. and the booming of construction outside my dorm window had shattered any sliver of a chance for me to reenter a state of slumber. I rose only to find that the dinner I had been consuming seven hours prior had unfortunately spilled across the left side of my duvet. This was likely due to a mindless placement of the takeout container when exhaustion had replaced sanity. It was at this point at which I determined my day would be utter trash. And I was right. Why else would I title this tale of sorrow “A University Horror Story” if I were not writing about a totally trash day?

In my previous column, I talked a lot about how I spent my summer working at a sleepaway camp in rural Maine. Well, the summer has officially come to an end and the semester has begun in full swing.

This is tough. There are a lot of elements you could be referring to here, and unfortunately there’s no quick solution or advice that could necessarily mend this situation. However, the foundation for all conflict and resolution of a relationship begins with communication. At the very least, you both need to be on the same page about this. What has she done to suggest she is less “into” your relationship? Do you mean you’re putting more effort into the relationship than she is? Have you discussed your feelings and anxieties surrounding the relationship together?

One of my favorite quotes comes from Lady Bird Johnson — a former first lady and the wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson. She once said, “Where flowers bloom, so does hope.” This quote has always given me some comfort and it rings true even more so now than before.

We have all been there. We have all experienced it. It is the feeling before an epiphany. It is an empty field of mental space, null and void of conscious thought. A barren wasteland of frustration and struggle. I am not talking about a specific place, per se. But a state of being which we have all experienced. “What is it?” you may ask. It is the state of Forgetfulness, and we have all fallen prey to its clutches. The summertime is when most fall victim to Forgetfulness. But fear not, I am here to start the gears back up in your mind. It may be too late for me, as there are multiple items on my to-do list that have continuously been pushed back since my memory has a habit of deleting stressful assignments. However, like a side character revived from the dead, I will use my 400 or so words left to assist you.
