While the race for Virginia’s next governor heats up, voters in Charlottesville and parts of Albemarle County also have the chance to vote for who will represent the 57th District in the Virginia House of Delegates in the Nov. 2 election. Charlottesville residents will also vote for new City Council, School Board, Commonwealth Attorney and Board of Supervisor seats.

The University’s endowment grew markedly over the 2020-2021 fiscal year despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to the University of Virginia Investment Management Company’s 2021 annual report. The endowment’s size currently stands at $14.5 billion, a 46 percent increase from its $9.9 billion valuation last year.

The University reinstated the two reading days positioned right around midterm season that many students call “fall break” this year after cancelling both spring and fall break during the 2020-21 academic year. Students and faculty spent the time relaxing and enjoying an extended weekend Monday and Tuesday.

Dani Alvarenga, third-year College student and president of the Cultural Organization for Latin Americans, educated a group of community members on COLA’s history and ongoing vision Monday night. The discussion was part of the Minority Rights Coalition’s Memory Mondays event series, which helps record the history and activism of different marginalized groups at the University.

More than 36,000 people packed Scott Stadium to watch the Cavaliers’ first two football games against William & Mary and Illinois on Sept. 6 and Saturday, respectively. The student sections contrasted a surge in cases nationwide and at the University, with new cases among students averaging 15 per day in advance of the first game and 14 per day before the second.

As coronavirus cases among students climbed in recent weeks to an average of 21 new cases per day, some professors expressed concern that symptomatic students are regularly reporting to class against the wishes of professors and University administrators. Expressing concerns about the Delta variant, educators urge students to continue wearing masks during class to protect themselves, their peers and faculty and staff.

New masking guidelines will be in place at the University for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis announced in an email sent Friday afternoon. All individuals are required to wear masks indoors on University property — including academic and administrative buildings, libraries, labs, dining halls, IM Rec facilities, and U.Va. Health locations — regardless of vaccination status beginning Monday, Aug. 9.

University leadership announced that the University will no longer limit gathering sizes and that students, faculty and staff are no longer required to social distance beginning Friday at midnight in a University-wide email sent Thursday afternoon. Visitors from outside the University will also no longer be restricted, and students, academic division faculty and staff are no longer required to use Hoos Health Check app before coming to Grounds. Email notifications for the Hoos Health Check app will also be turned off.

University leadership announced that those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors in an email to the community late Friday afternoon. The changes will go into effect Saturday at 9 a.m. and are in accordance with newly announced statewide and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

Many gas stations across the southeast, including in the Charlottesville area, are out of gas following a shortage caused by a ransomware attack on a major pipeline and subsequent panic buying by drivers. The shortage comes as many students are trying to leave Grounds as exams draw to a close while the Classes of 2020 and 2021 prepare to gather in Charlottesville to celebrate Final Exercises.

The Storm Prediction Center and the U.S. National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Charlottesville area from 1:50 to 8 p.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 4:08 p.m. and is expected to last until 5 p.m. The watch includes much of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland while the warning pertains mostly to the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

Following a request for analysis by Delegate Mark Keam, D-Va. 35, Attorney General Mark Herring announced Monday that he believes Virginia colleges and universities can condition in-person attendance on proof of being vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Queer Student Union ran its annual Drag Bingo event virtually Friday evening. The event, which is one of the main fundraising events for the club, had to be canceled last year after the University moved classes online in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is more on the University Elections ballot this semester than just the race for Student Council president. Candidates’ positions on Student Council, the Honor Committee, the University Judiciary Committee, School Councils and Class Councils are up for election. Four referenda from Student Council and UJC are also awaiting student votes.

Dean of Students Allen Groves rejected one plan for in-person Inter-Fraternity Council final hours and bid day in an email dated Jan. 29, according to documents made available to The Cavalier Daily after a Freedom of Information Act request. The email was part of a thread with Groves, two associate deans of students, two Office of the Dean of Students team members and Andrew Huffman, IFC president and third-year College student.
