Two student-run organizations that work to prevent sexual assault on Grounds, One Less and One in Four, have merged into one joint organization — Culture of Respect Educators, or CORE. As separate organizations in the past, One Less was comprised of female and gender-nonconforming students, while One in Four was comprised of students who identified as males.

After nine years of serving the Charlottesville community, Wings Over Charlottesville closed April 28. Wings Over, located on Ivy Road, is located on land owned by the UVA Foundation.

Virginia Athletics announced in a University-wide email Sunday that John Paul Jones Arena will open its doors to the University community for the National Championship game Monday night as Virginia faces Texas Tech in Minneapolis. JPJ Arena is home to Virginia’s men’s and women's basketball teams.

On Wednesday afternoon, James Fields Jr. — a white nationalist sympathizer and the driver in the car attack that killed Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer and injured dozens during the Unite the Right rally on Aug. 12, 2017 — pled guilty to 29 out of 30 federal hate crime charges levied against him in order to avoid facing the death penalty. Fields was already convicted in December of first-degree murder in Charlottesville’s Circuit Court.

Following the discovery of an online threat against students of color at Charlottesville High School last Wednesday, all Charlottesville City Public Schools were closed on Thursday and Friday as the Charlottesville Police Department worked to determine the legitimacy of the threat. The University, located only a few miles away from Charlottesville High School, did not send out an email alert or a statement to students.

From the introduction of 200 Lime electric scooters to Charlottesville in November 2018 to the addition of 100 more Bird electric scooters this January, the University and City of Charlottesville are embracing the e-scooter trend. However, concerns among University officials remain regarding the safety of e-scooters on Grounds.

The Board of Visitors’ Buildings and Grounds Committee met last Thursday to discuss a series of important issues, including selecting an architect to work on the second set of residence halls on Brandon Avenue as well as the architect for the remodeling of the North Grounds Mechanical Plant. The committee also met to discuss ongoing sustainability work at the University.

In response to President Donald Trump’s recent dismissal of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and what some saw as a threat to the existence of the Special Counsel investigation into foreign interference in the 2016 election, protesters gathered outside the Albemarle County Office Building Thursday evening. The protesters gathered to express their dissatisfaction with the appointment of Matthew Whitaker — who has expressed criticisms of the Russia probe — as Acting Attorney General.

New parking meters are slated to take effect in the Central Grounds Parking Garage in January 2019 — a change that will close a long-time loophole where students leaving the garage at late hours could avoid paying for parking.
