For as long as I can remember, I have kept a journal. I think I was six when I first started journaling with a notebook that had a lock and key — after all, a six-year-old has pretty confidential information to hide from prying eyes. In fact, I was so paranoid that someone would read my journal that I would rip up each page of a journal after I had finished using up all the pages.

February is officially in full swing, and that means Valentine’s Day is too. On a recent trip to the grocery store, I found myself surrounded with all things red and pink as soon as I entered. From gourmet chocolates to stuffed animals to heart-shaped novelty gifts — you name it and they had it. Walking past the front of the store, I felt a slight pang in my heart when I realized I would — once again — have to spend the holiday alone this year.

Music has always been a big part of my life. Whether it has been songs from my Pakistani roots or those from growing up in America, music has served as a constant companion. When I was little, my dad would play CDs of Bollywood songs whenever we were driving somewhere. As I grew older, I began to discover American artists — the Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato — many of whom hold a special place in my heart today. After all, once a Swiftie, always a Swiftie!

I have always been the type of person to hand write my notes. Not only am I a fan of these handwritten notes, but I go the extra mile with color coordination, calligraphy and washi tape. Thus, online school proved particularly tricky for me. I found myself gradually typing them alongside lectures on my laptop instead of moving back and forth between my laptop and notebook. Since everything was online, I felt like my notes also had to be online in order to keep everything uniform — it also just felt a lot easier to do so.

Usually, my biggest worry during the semester is my grades — am I going to be able to maintain the letter grade I have been working towards or not? However, my priorities are a lot different this semester, like many other things. Instead of being worked up about points I missed on an assignment, I find myself getting agitated by encounters with people who refuse to wear masks or those who wear theirs incorrectly. My biggest worry now is getting coronavirus. And a few days ago, it almost came true.

Despite all of the changes to the school year as a result of COVID-19, I was really excited to move back to Charlottesville and begin my second year. As a nursing student, the start of second year meant a lot more than no longer being the new class on Grounds. Second year meant actually feeling like a nursing student — from receiving our engraved stethoscopes to wearing scrubs whilst going to clinical labs.

I am not a hugger, and when I say this, I am not over exaggerating. Let me provide a little insight on just how much I hate hugs — my best friend and I have only hugged seven times in the span of five years.

I have always been the type of person to prefer snacks over meals. I would much rather munch on various foods throughout the day instead of eating three meals a day. Is that a little unhealthy? Some would say so — I disagree. Snacks are superior, and I stand by that.

These days, many of us have found ourselves with ample free time. Personally, finding myself with nothing but time and a growing book list, quarantine presented itself as the perfect opportunity to read. It has always been one of my favorite hobbies, but I often put it off because of other demanding aspects of life such as work and academics.
