Virginia State Senate passes a bill that would codify two nonvoting positions to U.Va.’s Board of Visitors

Virginia State Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that will add a new staff representative to the University’s Board of Visitors, as well as codify the faculty representative member into law.

Sunday’s meeting was adjourned at its scheduled ending time of 8 p.m. The next Honor Committee meeting will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Trial Room of Newcomb Hall.

Honor Committee debates proposed additions to the Constitution

Fatal shooting incident reported on 1000 Grove Street

According to the alert, police initially responded to reports of gunshots heard on Grove Street, located near the University Hospital. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered one male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

The Karsh Institute was created in 2021, funded by a $50 million donation from the Karsh family, which was matched by the University for a total of $100 million

University Judiciary Committee sanctions two organizations for hazing

Both organizations have been permitted to continue operations and recruitment while implementing hazing preventative measures.

Over the course of a weeklong recruitment, over 900 women toured the University’s 15 sorority chapters in a four-round process including round-robins, philanthropy showcases, house tours and preference events.

Current members of each sorority met new members with balloons and colorful signs in hand after new members opened their bid cards together without the presence of COVID-19 gathering restrictions that forced much of recruitment online in previous years.

The November shooting resulted in the fatalities of three University students who were also members of the football team — second-year College student Devin Chandler, fourth-year College student D’Sean Perry, and third-year College student Lavel Davis Jr.

The Naming of Facilities Committee said they prioritized renaming Venable and Clark because they are the oldest of the schools and their names no longer represent the system’s ideals.

Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools pursue name changes

Venable Elementary will become Trailblazers Elementary School, honoring the Charlottesville 12 who contributed to desegregation. Clark, currently named after a general who supported colonial expansion into Indigenous lands, will be renamed Summit Elementary.

The Committee entered a brief closed session at 7:40 p.m. to discuss case updates.

Honor Committee discusses case implications of generative AI software

According to the Committee, the main concern surrounding generative AI softwares like ChatGPT is that Honor will have no way to prove that an assignment or exam used AI beyond reasonable doubt.

Of the 55,845 applicants, 27 percent applied during the regular decision cycle, 65 percent during the early action cycle and the remaining 8 percent applied during the early decision cycle.
