LaRue grabs rookie honor with sizzling Hawaii play

After tallying a career-high 21 points Sunday in the Virginia women's basketball team's 85-64 win over Washington in the third-place game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic, first-year sensation Schuye LaRue was named ACC Rookie of the Week. A product of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington D.C., LaRue averaged 19 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest during Virginia's three-game Hawaiian swing.

Cav wrestlers look to replace departed stars

One would think the graduation of two All-Americans would spell doom for this year's Cavalier wrestling squad, but nothing could be farther from the truth. "Although we did lose two All-Americans, we still have the ability to achieve much success," 165-pound third-year Greg Francesca said. "Our goal each year is to win the ACC Championships," Cav Coach Lenny Bernstein said.

Basketball prepares for Golden Gophers

As the Virginia men's basketball team prepares to face Minnesota for the fourth time ever in the ACC/Big-10 Challenge tonight, the Cavaliers should be able to see how far they have come in just one year. What a difference a year should make for the Cavaliers -- where the starting lineup will not be required to tackle its Big Ten foe for the entire game.

For the second straight season and only the second time in school history, the Virginia volleyball team is headed to the NCAA Championship Tournament. After finishing their regular season with Saturday's 3-0 sweep of American, the Cavaliers (19-11, 9-7 ACC) received the bid Sunday evening. Virginia is scheduled to play Arizona Thursday on the University of Texas-Austin campus in the first round. Last season the Cavs virtually were assured of a berth after finishing the regular season second in the ACC.

The Virginia men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the first half on their way to a 3-1 victory over Brown in front of 2,284 spectators at Klöckner Stadium Sunday. Virginia (14-8-1) had Brown's number early, with first-year forward Ryan Gibbs scoring in the second minute of play off a Kenny Arena assist.

By the time yesterday's crowd at University Hall realized that the loud scream and tears were coming from Dean'na Mitchelson, the Virginia women's basketball team was worrying how they were going to survive without their leading inside presence.
