Virginia swimmers cruise past Wildcats

With only one meet left before the ACC championships, the Virginia swimming and diving teams added one more school to their lengthy list of victims this season. On Saturday the men's team (6-1, 3-1 ACC) raced past Villanova for a final score of 132-87 and the women's squad (7-0, 4-0 ACC) followed in similar fashion, winning 123-90. Virginia started off strong as the women's 200-yard medley relay teams claimed first, second and third place in the first event.

Lacrosse honors abound for Virginia

Virginia lacrosse fourth-years Amy Fromal, Ashley Widger and Stephy Samaras earned preseason LaxPower All-American honors Monday, seven months after guiding the Cavaliers to the NCAA finals against Maryland. Fromal and Widger, both Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association first-team All-Americans last season, made the preseason first team, while Samaras garnered an honorable mention. Fromal, who plays primarily defensive wing, scored the game-winning goal against Duke in the NCAA semifinals.

Cavaliers knock off Seminoles, 86-81

In a matchup of two surprisingly top-ranked ACC teams, Virginia took control during the final five minutes of last night's game in University Hall, earning a 86-81 victory over the Seminoles. Clutch foul shooting, intense defense and timely scoring allowed the Cavaliers to win their fourth Conference game, matching last season's ACC victory total. Donald Hand scored a game-high 28 points for Virginia (14-5, 4-2 ACC) while junior college transfer Stephane Dondon had a breakthrough game, coming off the bench and tallying 14 points on five of six from the floor. "Coach has been telling me to just relax and play my game, and it did happen" last night, Dondon said. Florida State (8-9, 3-3) led with just under five minutes remaining after Ron Hale, who posted 26 points and eight rebounds, gave the Seminoles a 69-67 lead.

Career week earns Anderson league accolade

Florida State senior forward Damous Anderson and Maryland freshman forward Tahj Holden received recognition from the ACC after notching career bests in victories last week. Anderson, named ACC Player of the Week, scored 24 points in a Seminole loss at Georgia Tech and a career-high 25 in FSU's upset of then-21st-ranked North Carolina Saturday.
