It was an emotional night as the Virginia volleyball team took the court Friday evening against top-ranked California, a team which had yet to drop a set all year.

Senior outside hitter Simone Asque took some of the sting out of the Virginia volleyball team's expected ninth-place conference finish this season. Asque earned a selection to the 2011 Preseason All-ACC Team Tuesday- the third-consecutive season she has been named to the team by the annual ACC volleyball preseason poll. The Virginia volleyball team concluded its season with a five-set loss at Virginia Tech Friday night.
The Virginia volleyball team will close out its season on the road beginning this weekend against Wake Forest and Duke. The Cavaliers (13-14, 7-10 ACC) are coming off a two-loss weekend during which they dropped matches against Clemson, 3-1, and Georgia Tech, 3-0. Facing Clemson Friday night, Virginia took the first set but was unable to overcome a strong surge by the Tigers. "One of the things that you have to take into consideration in competitive sports is the fact that when someone loses, especially when they are hosting the match, they're going to compete, and they're going to find ways to get better," Virginia coach Lee Maes said. During the Georgia Tech match, the Cavaliers came close in two sets but were unable to win the critical points to close them out. "With Georgia Tech, I think there was a lack of focus at specific times, and on defense I think some people weren't focused," sophomore setter Rachel Gray said.

"We had a good Senior Night, and I think we're just going to continue to win off of that," freshman middle hitter Mallory Woolridge said. Heading into this weekend, Virginia will focus on consistency, a season-long project that coach Lee Maes deems a "day-by-day" process. "It's going to be about doing a better job than we did this past weekend with our serving and be more consistent in the side-out process, especially with our passing," Maes said. Virginia is looking to take down Clemson (15-11, 6-9 ACC) for a second time after a thrilling five-set victory at Memorial Gymnasium Oct.

The Virginia volleyball team begins the back end of conference play this weekend, taking on Miami and Florida State at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (10-11, 4-7 ACC) are hoping to turn the tables on the Hurricanes and Seminoles, who both decisively defeated the Cavaliers at their respective home courts in September. When the Cavaliers faced Miami, they boasted three players with double-doubles and five who tallied double-digit digs.

The Virginia volleyball team had a tough weekend in Memorial Gymnasium, losing 3-0 Friday against Duke before falling 3-1 Sunday against Wake Forest. The losses ended a three-game winning streak for the Cavaliers (9-10, 3-6 ACC). The Blue Devils (16-3, 8-1 ACC) were knotted with Virginia at 9-9 in the first set Friday but pulled away to earn an 18-10 lead.
