For Women’s History Month 2026, The Cavalier Daily’s Sports desk is launching a dedicated digital collection of features, columns, personal essays and multimedia centred on the female student-athletes, coaches and staff at the University — all produced by the women on the Cavalier Daily staff.
Women’s sports comprise roughly half of the total competitions played across collegiate and professional sports events in the U.S. while only commanding 15 percent of media coverage. Only about one in five sports reporters nationally is female.
Although The Cavalier Daily cannot negotiate a collective bargaining agreement, improve funding for programs or restructure NIL deals, we can make editorial decisions about which stories receive our resources and attention — and this is one of those choices.
While March provides this occasion, this commitment does not expire come April 1. We want to empower and amplify the voices of the brilliant female reporters on our desk — that is something I believe our staff and readers will benefit greatly from.
