No. 2 Virginia defeated No. 49 Duke 4-1 Friday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, using a strong doubles start and commanding singles performances to remain unbeaten at home and in conference play.
The Cavaliers are now 4-0 in conference play.
Virginia closed out its first ACC dual of the season with a complete team performance, improving to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play while continuing to defend home court.
The Buckeyes got an early advantage with a strong doubles performance.
“I think it’s leadership,” Pedroso said. “Putting two guys who won the NCAA doubles title and sharing that experience and skill level with our whole doubles point rather than just keeping them at number one doubles, and so far it’s worked great. The other guys are playing better doubles because of it.”
Virginia will return to action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, scheduled Feb. 13-17.
After the match, Virginia Coach Andes Pedroso was quick to laud the visitors, praising both Vanderbilt’s performance and Brown’s impact on the program.
The Cavaliers will face Vanderbilt Sunday, a team led by former Virginia associate head coach Scott Brown.
The Cavaliers have started their season 4-0, with a marquee home matchup against Columbia Friday.
