One word stood out when analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Peter Schrager discussed former Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington at the NFL Combine in early March — “fun.” Both NFL Network analysts described him as “fun to watch” during the wide receiver workouts of the NFL Draft. Although a short evaluation of the player, it is altogether accurate. Washington is a player that is always open, even when he is covered by multiple players. Washington beats the defender with his route-running ability, or Washington beats perfect coverage. Hoping for ample opportunities on a talented professional squad, there are a few likely landing spots.

When Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton was announced as the sixth head coach in Virginia women’s basketball history, it was known that the program had a long road ahead in its rebuild — losing seasons had been the standard for the past decade. The Cavaliers were coming off of a 2021-22 season that only resulted in five wins out of 27 games, in addition to two forfeited games.

While the eyes of national football writers may have focused on powerhouses such as Ohio State, LSU or Oregon, Virginia football had a star of its own in graduate student wide receiver Malik Washington. Despite the Cavaliers’ less than stellar record in 2023, the transfer from Northwestern dominated the ACC en route to league-leading production. Even though his name is not as well known across the country, Washington should be considered among the best wide receivers in college football, including from an NFL potential standpoint.

Since the National Women’s Soccer League was founded in 2012, Virginia women’s soccer has had at least one player selected in the draft every year. The Cavaliers are one of only two programs to accomplish this feat, alongside Stanford. Coach Steve Swanson has engineered a system that consistently produces talent, enabling a seamless transition to the next level. This decade of dominance indicates that Virginia is the model collegiate program for women’s soccer players who have their eyes set on playing at the professional level in the United States. With the NWSL playoffs on the horizon, it may be time to brush up on where Virginia alumnae are situated within the league.

Earlier this month, Virginia women’s swimming and diving secured its third national title in three years, literally and metaphorically swimming laps around the competition. But just a few years prior to the three-peat, no one could have predicted the heights that the Cavaliers have reached.

While Virginia women’s basketball is not expected to make March Madness this season, the buzz and excitement for the team are the highest it has been in recent memory. Now, all eyes are on Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton in her first year.

While the NFL Draft is approximately six months away, the college football season is in full swing. Mock drafts under the title of “way-too-early predictions” are already infiltrating the internet. Like other Power-5 Conference schools, Virginia has a list of 2023 NFL Draft hopefuls this season. With it being the season’s midpoint, here are four players with the highest chance of turning NFL scouts’ heads for the Draft in April.

Earlier this month, news broke across college football media that Arch Manning — the top quarterback prospect in the 2023 class — was visiting Virginia. As the nephew of National Football League legends Peyton and Eli Manning, and the son of Cooper Manning, it’s fair to say that Manning is the biggest-name prospect to ever visit Virginia Football.

The National Football League Combine can make or break a player’s stock heading into the draft. The event is an opportunity for the prospects to show their athleticism and skill set that may not show up on tape — Virginia’s graduate student tight end Jelani Woods did just that.

Former Virginia men’s soccer stars Daryl Dike and Joe Bell made big European moves this transfer window during the month of January. Both were key players in the 2019 campaign that saw Virginia reach the final round of the NCAA Tournament.

The past four decades in NCAA women’s gymnastics have been dominated by the SEC and the PAC-12. Until 2021, Oklahoma was the only college outside of the two conferences to win a national championship. In the 2021 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship, however, Michigan shocked the gymnastics world by becoming the first Big Ten team to win the title.
